Running Head: THE PRENATAL DEVELOPMENT PERIOD 1

The Prenatal Development Period Alexandria Martin Psychology of Human Development (PSY 211 – 51) Rowan College at South Jersey February 3, 2020

Abstract This paper explores two published texts regarding research based on the prenatal development of pregnant women, their baby, and the postpartum development of mom and baby. This theory focuses on the information, knowledge, and understanding of how a baby is conceived, developed, and delivered. This analysis provides information regarding the three stages of prenatal development. The three stages of prenatal development are the germinal period, the embryonic period, and the fetal period.

During the last two months of prenatal development, fatty tissues form in the fetus to help the function of various organ systems (Santrock, 2020).

Conclusion After approximately thirty-eight to forty weeks, the fetus is fully developed and ready to be delivered. When it comes time to deliver, the mother’s amniotic fluid will break, and she will start having contractions approximately fifteen to twenty minutes apart (Santrock, 2020). A rush of oxytocin in the body will assist with contractions to push the baby into the birth canal, then out into the world. Having a healthy pregnancy is the key to growing a well-developed fetus. For optimal prenatal development, it is recommended for the mother to consume many healthy foods containing calcium, folic acid, iron, and protein (Nierenberg, 2018).
