Overview of Online Doctoral Programs

Differences between phds and professional doctorates.

In the U.S., the highest terminal degree a person can earn is a doctoral degree. Indicating an advanced level of expertise, doctoral degrees are generally divided into two categories: research doctorates, commonly known as PhDs, and professional doctorates. Both of these can be earned online, and we outline the differences between each below:

Research Doctorate — Probably the most familiar research doctorate is a Doctor of Philosophy, better known as a PhD The title is somewhat misleading because a student can earn a PhD in a number of subjects in the sciences and the humanities. Students earning research doctorates conduct original research that serves as the foundation of a written dissertation or project, which must be defended and approved before the degree can be awarded. Doctoral students in this category sometimes earn a master's degree in their chosen field before continuing on for a doctorate, and they often need three or more years to complete all of the requirements. Once they've earned their research doctorates, students typically move into academia or research positions.

Professional Doctorate — In contrast to a research doctorate, a professional doctorate focuses on acquiring the advanced knowledge and application-based skills needed to go into professional practice. Examples include a Doctor of Medicine (MD) for physicians, a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) for high-level nurses, and a Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) for lawyers. These are just a few of the many occupations that call for a professional doctorate, some of which also require licensure to go into practice. Students in this category may or may not need to earn a master's degree first, and it is not unusual for a student to take at least six years beyond the completion of a bachelor's degree to fulfill all of the requirements for earning a professional doctorate.

Can You Earn a Doctorate Degree Online?

Yes, there are many online doctoral programs to choose from, both for research doctorates and professional doctorates. Some of the more popular online options include the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), and the Doctor of Education (EdD). Online doctorates are especially appealing for working professionals. Students can usually arrange their coursework around their work schedules and other personal commitments. Plus, online doctoral candidates can choose among a multitude of options at schools across the country and beyond, selecting the best online program to help them achieve their career goals without having to change jobs or move.

How Do Online Doctoral Programs Compare to In-Person Programs?

Online and in-person doctoral programs share many similarities. Applicants typically need a bachelor's degree with a high GPA, competitive GRE scores, and strong references and personal essays. The curricula and requirements for online doctoral degrees are comparable to those of in-person programs, requiring significant time and effort, including primary research. Many online programs also require some on-campus meetings or residencies. Online doctoral candidates must effectively manage their time, stay on top of assignments, and communicate regularly with advisors. Degrees from accredited schools are respected equally, whether earned online or in-person.

Are Online PhD Programs Legitimate?

While some online PhD programs lack credibility, many reputable ones are offered by respected schools . The key to identifying credible programs is accreditation. The best online PhD programs are at accredited colleges and universities that meet accepted standards of accountability. An online PhD or doctorate from an accredited institution indicates you have completed the same rigorous coursework, passed the same exams, and conducted the same level of research as those with traditional degrees. Today's hiring managers increasingly recognize the self-discipline and perseverance required to complete a degree through online learning.

If you're considering going back to school for a doctorate and you're trying to decide which colleges or universities to apply to, one of the most important things to look for is institutional accreditation. Accreditation means that the school's programs, faculty, and student services have been evaluated by an approved, independent agency and found to meet or exceed recognized standards of excellence in education. The best online schools have been approved by one of six authorized regional accrediting boards or by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission ( DEAC ). A doctoral degree from an accredited institution assures future employers that you have received a rigorous, high-quality education. Also, it may be a requirement for you to earn licensure to practice your chosen profession.

For a complete list of accrediting agencies and accredited colleges and universities, visit the U.S. Department of Education website or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation ( CHEA ) website. Most schools' websites also list their accreditation status, or you can contact the school directly for more information. At OnlineU, we only list accredited colleges and universities.

Prerequisites and Admissions for Online Doctoral Programs

The admission requirements for online doctoral programs vary by school, just as they do for traditional doctoral programs. Some programs are only open to students who have already earned a master's degree in the same or a related discipline, while others accept students who have earned a bachelor's degree or a master's degree in an unrelated field. In addition to a previous degree, most admissions boards are looking for candidates who have the following:

A GPA of 3.0 or higher

Strong letters of recommendation

Persuasive personal statements

Competitive GRE or other standardized exam scores

In some cases, applicants will need to have accumulated a substantial number of hours of field experience or years of related work experience as well

Is It Possible to Get a Doctorate Without First Getting a Master's?

Yes, it is possible to get a doctorate without first obtaining a master's degree. Many doctoral programs, both online and on-campus, accept students directly from a bachelor's degree. Completion time varies widely, typically ranging from three to eight years, depending on required credit hours (36 to 120). Students with a related master's degree may receive credit for previous coursework, reducing their required credits and time. The dissertation or capstone project, along with individual commitments and revisions, can also extend the program length. Nonetheless, entering a doctoral program directly from a bachelor's degree is a viable and streamlined path.

In the U.S., many schools offer the option to skip a master's degree and go directly to a doctoral program, which is beneficial if you're certain about pursuing a doctorate. For example, if you aim for a career in academia, you can find PhD programs that accept students with only a bachelor's degree in the relevant field. Often, you will complete the coursework for a master's degree as part of your doctoral studies and be awarded the master's along the way.

While starting with a master's degree allows you to explore your interests and adjust to higher academic expectations, it also provides the opportunity to study at different universities and learn from diverse faculty. However, if you choose this route, ensure that your master's credits will transfer to your doctoral program, as not all programs accept credits from other institutions.

What Are Some Popular Doctoral Degrees to Earn Online?

Some of the most commonly offered online doctoral subjects include criminal justice, health care administration, psychology, engineering, counseling, information technology, business management, and organizational leadership. Perhaps even more popular are the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and the Doctor of Education (EdD) — two online doctoral programs that are available alongside many specializations.

Nursing (DNP)

An affordable nursing DNP program can help increase your return on investment in the long-run. Some common careers with this doctoral program is to become a certified nurse practitioner or a nurse manager.

Education (EdD)

When choosing an  affordable EdD program , you should keep in mind the careers for graduates, which include roles such as college president or chief learning officer. Coursework typically covers topics like organizational leadership and curriculum theory.

Psychology (PsyD)

An affordable psychology doctorate can help you obtain the necessary licensure to become a clinical psychologist, or you may want to pursue a role as an HR manager. Courses like Advanced Theories of Psychology and Cognitive Behavior can be helpful for many careers.

Counseling (PhD)

An affordable counseling doctoral program opens the door to all kinds of counseling careers, from a counseling psychologist to a school psychologist, with coursework that covers ethics and various laws in the field.

Cost of Online Doctoral Degrees

How much does it cost to get a phd online.

According to the most recent data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the average total cost of all graduate degrees — both master's degrees and doctoral degrees — ranges from about $12,596 at public schools to $28,017 at private, nonprofit universities. While these NCES numbers may be helpful as a starting point, they aren't specific to online students, and what an online student will pay is sometimes substantially different from what an on-campus student will pay.

Of the schools we researched in order to rank the most affordable online doctorate degrees, the median annual tuition rate is $11,950.

To get an accurate comparison of the online doctoral programs you're interested in, you can start by determining the per-credit tuition rates and multiplying that by the number of credit hours needed to complete the program. The cost per credit of doctoral programs on our site ranges from $290 to $1393. Then, to find your total cost, you must add in other fees shown on the schools' website and additional expenses, such as books, travel for residencies, and childcare.

However, most doctoral candidates do not pay the full price for their degrees. Many are offered fully funded programs or receive partial financial assistance towards their education.

Funding an Online Doctoral Program

There are many financial aid options for doctoral students, but the options differ for online students versus on-campus students. Many traditional PhD candidates are eligible for fully funded programs that feature paid tuition and stipends, but most students who get this kind of support earn it by working on campus, teaching and conducting research within the school's facilities. In this regard, online doctoral students are more like on-campus students who are pursuing terminal degrees in the humanities and the social sciences. They rarely qualify for full funding either, simply because there are so few school-sponsored research projects for them to contribute to.

However, online doctorate students can reduce the cost of their advanced degrees by considering affordable online PhD programs and by applying for other types of financial aid, especially those that do not have to be paid back, such as grants, scholarships, and fellowships. Tuition discounts due to military service or tuition reimbursement programs through employers are also preferred types of financial assistance.

If none of these options are available, or if they do not adequately cover all financial needs, doctoral students can apply for federally funded loans by filling out the FAFSA form or for private loans through banks and other financial institutions. The advantage of federal student loans is that they offer fixed interest rates (generally lower than private loan interest rates) and repayment plans tied to the graduate's income.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest online doctorate.

In the age where online learning is becoming the norm, it comes as no surprise that more and more institutions are offering doctoral degrees online. Online education, by its nature, tends to be cheaper than in-person learning. To give you a better idea, some of the cheapest online doctoral programs are:

  • North Carolina A&T State University’s Doctor of Philosophy program  costs just $233 per credit, or $4,194 per year in annual tuition for in-state residents. However, tuition is significantly higher for residents of other states.
  • Columbia Southern University  offers doctorate programs at $435 per credit hour (or $391.50 for CSU Learning Partner members). The university tries to include textbooks  and eBooks in the total cost to lower your costs even more. Of course, this may not always be valid for those working toward doctorates.

It’s worth mentioning that many doctorates (even those online) offer financial aid opportunities to help you pay part or all of your tuition costs. It may be worth looking into programs where these opportunities exist.

Do Online Ph.D. Programs Provide Financial Aid?

If you want to earn your doctorate online, you can still apply for FAFSA  if the school or program accepts it. Consider online schools and programs that offer financial aid.

Most universities will offer scholarships and grants to qualifying students, whether they are attending in-person or online classes. For example, students at Missouri State University’s Doctor of Nursing program can apply for MSU’s annual scholarship.

Note: Although you can apply for various scholarships, grants, and other forms of financial aid, there are no guarantees that you’ll be able to get them.

Are Online Ph.D. Programs Legitimate?

Yes, there are a large number of legitimate online Ph.D. programs offered by reputable institutions. As with any higher-education program, it’s essential to check that the school is accredited before enrolling, as this is directly related to the value of any qualification. It’s also important to consider the institution’s reputation, which may influence potential future employers.

Can I Get a Ph.D. for Free?

Several fully-funded Ph.D. programs  offer doctorates with no out-of-pocket costs. These programs typically cover tuition and other expenses for the entire duration of the program through scholarships, grants, work-study, or a combination of these. Some schools even offer a stipend for living expenses.

However, many of these programs involve on-campus attendance. The options for fully-funded online doctoral programs are much more limited.

Key Takeaways

An online doctoral qualification not only helps you to advance your career but also encourages your personal development via critical thinking, leadership, and analytical skills. You’ll find that pursuing one of the cheapest online Ph.D. programs in 2022 will provide countless benefits!

What Is a Doctoral Degree?

A doctoral degree is the most advanced academic or professional degree in a specific field. A doctorate can validate your mastery of a particular discipline. While a doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) may be the most recognizable doctorate, many schools offer other kinds of doctoral programs as well. Below are some of the most commonly offered doctoral programs.

  • Doctor of Education (Ed.D.): This practitioner-oriented degree program focuses on applied knowledge rather than theoretical research in education. The program usually takes three years to complete and is often offered online.
  • Juris Doctor (JD): Most U.S. states require a person to hold a JD to practice law. The program typically requires three years of study and is rarely offered online.
  • Doctor of Business Administration (DBA): A professional doctorate for business leaders and strategists, the DBA emphasizes practical research, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Doctor of Public Health (DrPH): For public health practitioners, a DrPH may stand independently or supplement a Ph.D. or doctor of medicine (MD). This degree may emphasize domestic or international public health. It can take 4-9 years to complete part time, and many programs are offered online.
  • Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP): This degree prepares registered nurses (RNs) for careers in leadership, research, or academia. The DNP also meets the academic qualifications necessary for a nurse to become a nurse practitioner or certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA).

Why You Should Consider Online Ph.D. Programs

  • Online Ph.D. programs typically offer more flexibility than on-campus programs, which makes it easier to balance your studies with other obligations.
  • Some online doctoral programs may be less expensive than in-person programs.
  • According to the BLS, in 2023, holders of doctoral degrees earned a median annual salary of $109,668 compared to $77,636 for people with a bachelor's degree.
  • In 2023, the unemployment rate for people with only a bachelor's degree was 38% higher than that of doctorate holders, per the BLS.
  • In an online Ph.D. program, you can conduct specialized research and work toward becoming an expert in a field you're passionate about.

The Importance of Accreditation in Online Doctorate and Ph.D. Programs

Accreditation ensures that your college meets an established standard of learning and awards recognized credentials. Attending an accredited school also means you can apply for federal student aid .

Institutional Accreditation

Schools with institutional accreditation have been evaluated and approved by a regional or national accrediting agency. These schools have met financial, governance, academic, and other requirements for accreditation, which are vital for schools at every level of study.

Programmatic Accreditation

Individual programs within a college or university may receive programmatic accreditation from a program-specific agency, such as the American Bar Association or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

Careers that require state licensure usually require completion of an accredited program.

How Much Does a Doctoral Degree Cost?

According to NCES data, the average annual tuition and fees for graduate programs amounted to $20,513 in 2021-2022 . Private nonprofit institutions cost an average of $29,931 annually, while public universities had a lower average yearly cost of $12,596.

Other factors can affect the cost of an online Ph.D. or doctoral degree , including textbooks and supplies, distance learning fees, and whether you're attending an in-state or out-of-state institution.

You can offset some of these costs by submitting the FAFSA and applying for scholarships and fellowships. Many Ph.D. students also receive a stipend or tuition remission for teaching or research work.

Careers You Can Get With a Doctorate

A doctorate can open the door to many professions, including psychologist, medical doctor, and college professor. The degree can also help you move into leadership roles in business, healthcare, and education.

Many jobs that require a doctorate are in demand. For example, the BLS projects jobs for veterinarians to grow by 19% from 2023-2033. A doctoral degree can also lead to high-paying careers. The BLS reports that in 2023 the median annual salary for physicians and surgeons was over $239,000 , and the median annual salary for dentists was over $170,000 .

While you can pursue some doctorates 100% online, many require at least some on-campus or in-person study. The table below provides salary information on careers that require doctoral degrees, regardless of how they are earned.

5 Tips for Choosing the Cheapest Online Doctoral Program

Want to figure out which online doctoral program is best for you? Check out the five essential tips below.

1. Understand Your Goals

If you're considering an online doctoral program, you should understand your professional goals and know what kinds of jobs you want to qualify for after graduation.

Not all careers require a doctorate; however, a doctorate can provide you with better salary potential and more leadership opportunities, especially in fields like education and public health .

Ask yourself: Do you need a Ph.D. for your chosen field? If not, how will a doctorate help you?

2. Research Accredited Online Programs

There are many online Ph.D. programs to choose from, but not all are created equal.

Make sure the schools you're considering for your online doctorate are accredited by a recognized agency . If you're applying for a doctorate in a professional field like nursing , medicine, education, law, counseling, or business management, you should also look for programmatic accreditation.

As you research online doctoral programs, consider how you wish to learn. Do you want a hybrid or 100% online format? Does the program require any in-person components? Decide what works best for your goals and schedule.

3. Consider Your Budget and Financial Aid Options

Before you apply to online Ph.D. programs, take time to understand your budget and the cost of each program you're considering. Some doctoral programs will cost far more or less than others. Some programs may be fully funded, making them highly competitive.

Submitting the FAFSA can help you find federal financial aid you might qualify for, such as grants, scholarships, and low-interest loans. You should also research institutional grants, external scholarships and fellowships , and private loans.

4. Reach Out to Faculty, Students, and Alumni

Consider contacting faculty members, current students, and recent alums of the graduate program you're interested in. This can help you to better tailor your application and have a clearer idea of what to expect during and after the program.

5. Choose One of the Top Doctoral Programs

A top-ranked doctoral program can help you reach your professional goals.

Use your research on program outcomes, doctoral specializations, and faculty mentors to identify the best programs for you. Then, double-check that you meet the admission requirements, and start working on your application.

How can i make my doctorate program more affordable.

A doctoral degree program can be made more affordable by looking for programs that offer tuition discounts, tuition waivers, or scholarships. Students should also look into the cost of living in any potential locations and investigate loan and grant options.

Other cost-saving measures include taking courses online or part-time, depending on the availability of courses in the program. Additionally, some universities may offer stipends or fellowships to help offset costs.

How long will an online doctorate take to earn?

An online doctoral program can vary in the length of time it takes to complete. Generally, online PhDs take the same amount of time as an on-campus program would take. However, because online education is usually accomplished while working full time or completing other responsibilities, the classes may take longer for individuals to complete.

The average student in any Ph.D. program will take 8.5 years to complete their doctorate. Some programs may be completed in as little as three years. On average, one can expect to take five years to complete an online or on-campus Ph.D. program.

  • Things to consider when evaluating the time it takes to complete an online Ph.D. are:
  • The projected timeline proposed by the school for the program;
  • How many responsibilities and other duties one has outside of accomplishing the Ph.D.;
  • Whether or not one has credits that will transfer into the program and related to this;
  • Whether one will be able to test out of any proposed classes in the program.

Looking closely at the prescribed program as well as talking to your adviser and accurately adjudicating one’s schedule, will give a pretty close estimate of the time it will take to complete an online Ph.D. program.

What is the average cost of an online doctoral degree?

According to Guide to Online Schools, over 245 schools now offer an online doctoral degree. Doctoral degrees are offered online in various fields, including:

  • Literature,
  • Philosophy,
  • Public Health,
  • Technology,
  • Engineering,
  • and many others.

The cost of acquiring an online doctoral degree can be less than attending a traditional classroom, depending on the type of school one attends. The average tuition for a doctoral degree in a traditional setting is between $15,000-$20,000 a year (according to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System).

According to NCES, public institutions offer the least expensive degrees, with traditional doctorates averaging around $11,000. Private Non-Profit Institutions, on the other end of the spectrum, cost around $25,000 a year. Private For-Profit Institutions cost about $14,000 a year for a doctoral degree.

More and more top public and private research institutions are offering online degrees, some of which are included on this list. The average cost of an online doctoral degree on this list is about $500 a credit, which comes to around $10,000 a year.

Are online doctoral degrees 100% online?

The list in this article of the most affordable online degrees only includes degrees in which the coursework can be completed 100% online. Often a doctorate will require one or several visits to campus as residencies, though many on this list do not require this.

A residency can be very helpful in forging connections, meeting classmates in person as well as doing intensive study, and working with faculty. If an institution advertises 100% online coursework, the residencies may be considered differently. However, with advancing technology, it is becoming more common for online doctorates to be able to be completed 100% online.

In a research field, the work in a doctorate is primarily intellectual and therefore doesn’t require on-site, hands-on experience. However, a field such as Chemistry has the option for physical research as well as theoretical. In these types of doctorates, a yearly residency may be necessary to complete the requirements for the degree. Technology has affected even these degrees, however, with the developing world of online labs.

How important is it for my online doctorate to be accredited?

When acquiring an online doctorate, not only should cost be a factor, but accreditation should be as well. The quality of a doctorate is monitored by accreditation. An applicant having an accredited Ph.D. may make a difference for an employer when looking to hire new employees.

Graduate programs may have regional accreditation and also a programmatic accreditation for the specific doctorate being offered. If one is looking to enter an academic field, having an accredited degree is very important as the accreditation will be noticed. Because serious academics usually have accredited degrees, one’s circle of colleagues and classmates will be of a higher caliber in an accredited degree program.

Only programs with accreditation can grant federal aid, which should also be considered. Another aspect of accreditation to consider is that transferring credits from one institution to another may only be possible if the credits were acquired from an accredited institution.

If you are already employed, and your doctorate will be covered by your employer, often the doctorate will have to be accredited in order to qualify for tuition reimbursement. In sum, advancing one’s career and financing one’s doctorate will both be affected by ensuring that a doctorate is accredited.

What are the usual prerequisites to enter an online doctoral program?

Most online doctoral programs require applicants to have a bachelor’s and master’s degree. These degrees can sometimes be in a related field, or some doctoral programs may require applicants to have a degree in the field they are entering.

A specific GPA requirement usually needs to be met in order to be accepted into a doctoral program. Another prerequisite may be work or experience in the field of doctoral studies. Entering an online doctoral program may require particular prerequisites in working with online technology.

Testing may be required throughout the doctoral program to ensure a student’s aptitude in their field of research. Applying for an online doctoral program will generally require the following:

  • Application Fee – usually between $50-$100
  • Application Form
  • Resume – including all work experience and education
  • Statement of Purpose – including generous information about why the doctorate is a good fit
  • Standardized Testing – usually, the GRE or the GMAT or a standardized test in one’s field may be required.
  • Letters of Recommendation – often, three letters will be required from former professors or colleagues in the field of study that one wishes to enter
  • Official Transcripts – from all colleges and universities attended
  • TOEFL – often required for those whose first language is not English

Cheapest Online Ph.D. Programs 2024

January 26, 2024 | Admin

Cheapest Online PhD Programs

In a job market saturated with bachelor’s degree holders, Millennials and Gen Xers need to work harder than ever to differentiate themselves. While a master’s degree can certainly help you stand out, obtaining your PhD remains a distinguished accomplishment in almost any field.

Fortunately, there’s never been a better time to set your sights on this lofty goal: the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the number of doctoral degree holders has more than doubled to 4.5 million since 2000, fueled in no small part by the growing number of online postgraduate programs offered by regionally and nationally accredited institutions. Where online degrees were once viewed with skepticism, this ongoing shift makes it clear: not only is web-based learning at the postgraduate level here to stay, but it’s also a valid way to earn your doctoral degree while juggling other priorities in your life.

Despite the proliferation of programs and convenience offered by online learning, cost remains a barrier to many who wish to further their education. Don’t let it stand in your way: it’s possible to earn your PhD without breaking the bank. Start your journey toward joining the growing number of American doctoral degree holders today by reviewing our list of the cheapest online doctorate programs.

5 Most Affordable PhD Programs

How much do online phd degrees cost.

In short, it depends. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the median tuition and fees paid to several types of universities in 2020-21 were as follows:

  • Public Institution: $12,394
  • Private, for-profit institution: $14,301
  • Private, nonprofit institution: $28,445

While these figures represent broad costs associated with postgraduate degrees, they’re helpful as a starting point for comparison. However, finding the cheapest online PhD can be challenging because costs are influenced by many factors, including the subject area you intend to study and the school where you’d like to earn your degree.

Some of the factors to consider include length of program and per-credit costs. For example, one online doctoral degree program focused on education could take three years to complete and cost approximately $86,000, while another requires only two years of full-time coursework at a cost of roughly $47,500.

Fortunately, some of the cheapest online doctorate programs can be completed for less than $300 per credit.

How Long Will It Take to Earn a PhD Online?

In general, you should expect to spend three to seven years working toward your online doctorate degree, but again, many factors can influence where your experience lands on this spectrum, including what you’re studying and where you’re studying it. Some institutions offer accelerated programs that promise a degree in as little as two years; others will allow you to transfer credits from another school, helping you save time and money.

Why Attend an Online PhD Program?

According to a United Nations study, 85 percent of American males and 67 percent of American females work more than 40 hours per week. Fortunately, the cheapest online PhD programs are often flexible: you can complete your coursework and watch lectures from anywhere with a computer and an Internet connection. No need to waste hours commuting or show up a sweaty mess after running to class from your parking spot halfway across campus. Eliminating the need to choose between family and work obligations or furthering your education and career makes online learning a great option for working professionals, parents, or those who do not live within easy commuting distance of a program.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that most online doctorate programs still require some element of in-person participation. For example, you will still likely need to appear on campus to defend your dissertation against the faculty, or to attend required symposiums. Some programs may also require you to spend an occasional weekend “in residency” on campus. Treat these as opportunities not only to meet faculty and classmates face-to-face but to grow your network – you never know where your next opportunity might come from.

Typical Benefits of Online Courses vs On-Campus Learning: Summary

  • No commuting for bulk of the program
  • Complete coursework on your schedule
  • Continue working full-time while you study

No matter the degree you choose to pursue, remember that a PhD is mostly focused on research: as you complete your initial coursework, you’ll be expected to formulate a position around some aspect of your field. From there, you’ll complete a document called a dissertation, which takes years and requires copious research. To finally obtain your PhD, you’ll need to orally defend the position in your dissertation against a board of faculty members attempting to disprove your argument. It’s a rigorous process designed to prepare you for a research-centric career.

For an in-depth look at possible career paths, check out Indeed.com’s list of 38 careers that require a doctoral degree. We’ve gathered ten for you below, excluding roles from medical and legal fields:

  • Professor: About $61,100 a year

Tips for Managing Costs While Attending an Online PhD Program

Even the cheapest online PhD programs will likely require most students to find financial assistance. Fortunately, there are several ways to reduce the cost of your degree before considering a loan.

  • Scholarships, Grants, and Fellowships – For graduate school, there simply aren’t as many opportunities for scholarships and financial aid as there are for undergrads. One way to help keep track of the opportunities that do exist is a scholarship spreadsheet: use this to track scholarships you’ve applied for as well as their requirements. Many can be quite specific, but there are some scholarships that are awarded more broadly. Meanwhile, fellowships are short-term programs that can help cover some of your costs, and may even provide a stipend. However, many of these programs are very competitive and can require significant commitments.
  • Budgeting – Creating and sticking to a budget can be challenging, but it’s a key way to help you graduate with as little debt as possible – not to mention a generally helpful life skill. Small, recurring expenses can be easy to overlook on a day-to-day basis, but with a budget in place, it’s much easier to step back and look at the big picture to understand where your money is going each month.
  • Loans – Once you’ve done everything you can between scholarships, fellowships, and budgeting, it’s time to consider loans. Make sure to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year. If there are still financial gaps, a private graduate student loan can help you make it happen.

Texas tech university.

  • Lubbock, Texas
  • Graduation Rate: 60%

texas tech university

Since 1923 Texas Tech has been an institution in Lubbock, Texas. It was originally established as an institution to study and assist advancement in agriculture. Since then, the university has grown to offer multiple academic programs, among them well-established doctorate programs. Texas Tech has been well-engaged with building and offering online Ph.D. programs as well. Specifically, Texas Tech currently offers the following:

Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Agriculture Education Doctor of Education in Higher Education Doctor of Philosophy in Systems and Engineering Management Doctor of Philosophy in Technical Communication and Rhetoric

Among these programs, the Ph.D. in Education is the lowest cost, charging close to a community college price with a rate of $166.50 per credit. However, you  do need to be an in-state resident. Otherwise, the cost jumps to a still affordable value of $274 per credit. The program, however, isn’t entirely online. Doctoral students do have to spend at least one week on campus a year and take an intensive phase in the program. Overall, the Ph.D. program takes 60 credits total and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

School Overview

New mexico state university.

  • Las Cruces, New Mexico
  • Graduation Rate: 44%

One of the oldtimers in terms of institutions created before 1900, New Mexico University has been a longtime resident of Las Cruces in the state, and it joins the modern world of digital education programs with at least four different online Ph.D. programs:

Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership Doctor of Philosophy in Curriculum and Instruction Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing

In terms of cost, New Mexico State offers affordable degree programs, only charging $278.60/credit as its state tuition for graduate classes. However, only state residents get the benefit of this low cost. Out of state students will have to be pay close to three times the resident cost. Regional residents who may qualify for multi-state education agreements might realize different prices as well, depending on their location.

Similar to other schools, the doctorate programs at New Mexico State are either in the education field or in nursing. The length of the programs varies with a standard near 63 units while the Education Leadership degree is much longer totaling 78 credits. Each of the programs has some kind of in-person requirement, typically associated with the dissertation defense or orientation. New Mexico State University in general is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of College and Schools, but their education degree programs vary a bit. The National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education is the basis for the Education Ph.D. program’s validity.

California Coast University

  • Santa Ana, California

An outlier among universities, California Coast University is a far younger institution that started in 1973. Operating its physical campus in Orange County, Southern California, the school offers three distinct online doctorate programs with a low cost of $290/credit. These programs include:

Doctor of Education in Educational Administration Doctor of Education in Educational Psychology Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership

All of these California Coast University Ed.D. programs focus on leadership as a common theme, whether the coursework centers on management or the organization of the educational institution. As part of this training, doctoral students will gain competency in and detailed exposure to educational thinking, measurement tools, scientific research interpretation, and analytical practice in how society and life impact education. The school’s distance learning programs are verified and accredited to graduate standards via the Distance Education Accreditation Commission.

Valdosta State University

  • Valdosta, Georgia
  • Graduation Rate: 36%

Situated in, aptly named, Valdosta, Georgia, the same-named State University has been teaching students since it opened in 1906. In a different path than the usual education-oriented programs, Valdosta provides a Ph.D. in Public Administration instead. This program will run a student $293/credit for attending and completion. The program itself uses coursework to train graduates on four core areas of public policy administration: analysis, leadership, communication, and management. Much of the program assumes the candidate already has a significant amount of experience in public administration and focuses on the specialization and enhancement of that experience with graduate-level training. Overall, students will spend 54 credit hours before completing the program, which includes a capstone project. There are residency seminars for in-person training which involve a one-week period each semester on campus.

Enrollment requires prospective students to have a master’s degree from a prior university and is the baseline requirement for acceptance into the  doctorate program .   GRE scores and an acceptable GPA are also necessary. Applicants can also expect to need to show their work experience on a robust resume, provide a statement of why the program is chosen and what will be done with the training in terms of goals, and three recommendation letters. The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), including the online doctorate.

The American College of Education

  • Indianapolis, Indiana

The American College has been an aggressive player in distance learning higher education for quite a few years now, even though the institution was only established in 2005. With a restricted focus to just education programs, the American College offers both master’s degree and doctorate level training for students, providing multiple paths for advancement in education  leadership roles . The cost of attendance in the Ph.D. program is currently $336/credit.

Similar to other schools, the online doctoral degree in Education assumes a working experience and knowledge of the field. An ideal applicant already has a master’s degree of some type in organizational strategy, preferably education but an MBA or a master’s of science are viable. In addition, work at other schools can be transferred in, up to 18 credit hours. The program itself is entirely online with the use of virtual training and collaboration tools. Students are geared towards being on the frontline of pushing radical shifts in education with the newest and latest research. The entire doctorate path and program for the American College of Education is reviewed regularly and accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

University of West Georgia

  • Carrollton, Georgia
  • Graduation Rate: 39%

Also in Georgia and situated in Carrolton since 1906, the University of West Georgia currently offers a doctorate in Education with three different flavors under the same degree:

Nursing Education Professional Counselling and Supervision School Improvement

The cost for attendance is approximately $312/credit, not including administrative fees per semester. Designed with a standard 60 credit program length for an accepted student, the West Georgia doctorate program allows a student 11 semester periods to complete the degree path, which includes 15 credits associated with successful completion of a dissertation. An adjustment is made reducing the program length to 39 credits for those who already have an Ed.S degree prior to entry. The ideal student will graduate with robust training in executive education leadership skills or be prepared to take on a  higher education leadership  position as part of the senior faculty. In general, the University of West Georgia is regularly reviewed and accredited like many institutions in the south by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC).

University of Nevada

  • Reno, Nevada
  • Graduation Rate: 53%

Established in 1864 and located in Reno, Nevada, the University of Nevada prides itself at an affordable $269/credit that beats out many schools offering bachelor’s degrees for three or four times as much. As an online college and educator as well, the University of Nevada offers the online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) as well as the Doctor in Judicial Studies. The nursing path is not the most high-demand degree, often being available for just a select group of advanced nursing professionals, like those already with a Master of Science in Nursing ( MSN ), who are seeking training for higher management or teaching positions themselves in nursing and healthcare. Rooted in evidence-based practice theory, the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) at the university allows two paths for candidates: either a master’s degree succession or a bachelor’s degree going direct to a doctorate level. Within the program, doctoral students get to choose from either the management-oriented Executive Nurse path or the Advanced Practice Nurse. If, however, a student comes via the bachelor’s degree in nursing path, then the student can choose from three different practice paths. Students have to attend at least two days for orientation and one day for defending a dissertation.

The Judicial Studies degree is a restricted program in which only sitting judges can attend. The student must already have a master’s degree (usually a law degree by default) and three letters of recommendation.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln

  • Lincoln, Nebraska
  • Graduation Rate: 67%

Right in the middle of the education doctorate (Ed.D.) market, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln provides on-campus classes in Lincoln, Nebraska, but offers an online Ph.D. program in Education with a cost of $326/credit. The school has been in operation since 1869, and the current doctorate program provides three different degrees to choose from:

Doctor of Education in Educational Administration Doctor of Education in Educational Studies Doctor of Philosophy in Education Studies

While Nebraska-Lincoln does service the general market for students seeking credentials to move to executive positions and leadership, the school’s doctorate program also focuses on education research with the Doctor of Philosophy in Education Studies. Designed more for the true academic, this doctorate degree level path can specialize in three additional areas from special education to teacher training to institutional administration.

Even though the majority of the Nebraska-Lincoln doctorate path is online and can be taken anywhere with an Internet connection, each attending student has to participate in at least six hours of research meetings and seminars. The overall program will take 90 credit hours to complete, even though much of the content assumes a working knowledge of the education field in students. For accreditation, the university regularly reviewed and rated by the Higher Learning Commission.

The University of the Cumberlands

  • Williamsburg, Kentucky
  • Graduation Rate: 78%

Being one of the most diverse in doctoral online programs, the University of the Cumberlands offers online courses for graduate degrees that cover business, education, and psychology. No surprise, the program gets a lot of attention from different industries versus just the typical education market. The University of the Cumberlands offers five different programs online :

Doctor in Leadership (Business and Education), Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Counselor Education & Supervision Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership Doctor in Clinical Psychology (hybrid attendance) Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology (hybrid attendance)

Unlike many of the competitors, the University of the Cumberlands is a private institution. The cost currently runs approximately $375/credit for a doctoral program student. However, the psychology doctoral degree is a higher price point at $550/credit. The leadership path primarily trains a student to perform an executive role in education but it could be applied in business environments as well. The psychology doctoral program is a bit longer than the others (73 credit hours versus 60), and it operates in a hybrid format. Students attend a weekend session in person and then perform other hours online. A clinical training requirement also necessitates in-person attendance as well, which will offer online students an advanced, personal look into mental health  training. Overall, the university is accredited and validated regularly by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Delta State University

  • Cleveland, Mississippi
  • Graduation Rate: 43%

Specific to the medical field, a student can obtain an online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) via Delta State University. The school was originally established in 1924, and today it provides multiple nursing programs for a variety of student levels. For the online graduate, the doctoral program can be entered by either a bachelor’s degree in nursing or with a master’s degree in the same field. Both are sizable programs with hefty expectations for aspiring healthcare professionals. The bachelor’s path will require 114 credit hours to complete (about 9 semesters). The master’s degree or traditional path will take 31 to 83 credit hours to finish, depending on which doctoral path the student chooses. The fastest is the Family Nurse Practitioner Doctor in Nursing. The longest is the Non-Family Nurse Practitioner path. Every program also expects at least 420 hours of clinical work, but the Non-Family Nurse Practitioner degree requires 1,020 hours in the clinic. Despite being medically-oriented, Delta State University’s doctorate programs fall under the school’s general accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Columbia Southern University

  • Orange Beach, Alabama
  • Graduation Rate: 22%

Columbia Southern University offers a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree online which will provide an in-depth application of theory and research to students pursuing online learning. The graduate program will also help students sharpen their decision-making and leadership skills in a business setting as well as discover and use methods to solve industry problems. The doctorate degree requires 61 total credit hours, 9 of which may be accepted as transfer credits. A dissertation and defense are required of doctoral students, but this can be done from a distance using audio/visual technology.

Two online learning options are available to students, which are helpful for those wanting to study part-time. CSU’s Lifepace Learning option doesn’t have start/end dates and allows students to complete courses at their own pace, which is anywhere from 4- to 18-weeks. The Term Enrollment option lets students complete assignments at their own pace but does have a course start and end date that can keep students on track. The Term Enrollment option is also open to federal financial aid for qualifying students. Students who take one class every term (usually 9 weeks) can expect to graduate in about three years.

CSU is accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC).

50 Most Affordable Online PhD and Doctoral Programs in 2024

Below is our list of the 50 U.S. colleges and universities with the most affordable online doctoral and PhD programs available in 2024. We’ve used the following methodology to develop this list.

Cabrini University offers two affordable doctorate degrees: the PhD in organization development and change and a doctorate of education in educational leadership. Both are offered in a hybrid format, meaning some components are completed online and others in person. Many courses are offered in a blended learning format, so students complete some class sessions in person and others virtually. The degrees also offer a great deal of flexibility, especially in terms of when in-person class sessions are offered, so working students can balance their degree with a full-time career. In fact, all courses in the PhD in organization development and change happen during one weekend each month. Students complete coursework between these monthly classes, adhering to the scholar-practitioner model. Coursework for the doctorate of education is on a weekly basis, in a hybrid format.

Program Highlights:

PhD or DBA in Organization Development and Change

  • Credits: 73
  • Length: 3 years
  • Cost: $830/credit
  • Mode: Hybrid
  • Accreditation: Middle States Commission on Higher Education

EdD in Educational Leadership

  • Credits: 54
  • Length: 2 years

Ashland University offers five flexible doctoral degrees. The first two are doctorates of leadership, with traditional or executive tracks available. In the traditional program, students complete coursework on leadership in K-12 over the course of three years. The executive program is accelerated, allowing students to graduate in as little as two years. In either program, students take courses in a hybrid format. The blended courses mean most classes are online, but almost every course has an in-person component, usually in the evenings or on the weekends. The other three doctoral degrees are housed in the nursing school. The three DNPs include family practice, health systems leadership, and advanced practice. It is possible to complete all three online, though they all have different coursework and application requirements.

Doctorate in Leadership Studies, Traditional

  • Credits: 59
  • Length: 2-3 years
  • Cost: $780/credit
  • Accreditation: Higher Learning Commission

Doctorate in Nursing Practice

  • Credits: 38-77
  • Cost: $770/credit

Fort Hays State University offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree with two entry options. The first option is comprised of 75 credits and intended for those who hold a bachelor's degree in nursing. In this program, students complete more clinical hours and take some foundational courses that would usually be covered in an MSN program. The second option is a 33 credit MSN to DNP program. With this option, students need to take fewer courses, and they can move right into their doctoral coursework. In both programs, students also complete a doctoral project that is mentored by a faculty member. Both programs are available fully online. Clinical requirements are completed in person, at a hospital or healthcare facility near the student.

Doctorate of Nursing Practice

  • Credits: 33-75
  • Length: 1-4 years
  • Cost: $260.96/credit in-state | $669.57/credit out-of-state
  • Mode: Online

Nurses who are considering getting their doctorate degree will want to know more about the DNP program from Texas A&M's Corpus Christi campus. Though the program is housed on the Corpus Christi campus, it can be completed online, offering much needed flexibility for those with a full-time job or other life obligations. To make it even easier to balance with work, the DNP is designed to be taken on a part-time basis. Students can choose between two DNP concentrations: the executive leadership track and the nurse practitioner track. The executive leadership focus is for students looking to enter healthcare administration or nursing leadership. The NP focus is for those who want to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner in Texas. In both tracks, students must also complete a DNP final project. As the degree is considered post-master's, it's for those with a MSN in the field. At this time, there is no BSN to DNP option.

Doctor of Nursing Practice

  • Credits: 40
  • Cost: $271/credit in-state | 592/credit out-of-state
  • Accreditation: Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education

The University of West Georgia offers four doctoral degrees, which are the doctorates in higher education administration, nursing education, education with a focus on professional counseling and supervision, and education with a focus on school improvement. For all four degrees, all coursework can be taken online. The doctorate project or dissertation, depending on the program, can also be completed virtually. Students who select the school improvement degree also choose between nine concentrations: school counseling, educational leadership, K-12 online learning, instructional technology, reading, media specialist, teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), special education, and early childhood education. For all four programs, applicants should already have an advanced degree and work experience in the field of education at the time of applying.

What Makes an Online Doctoral Program Affordable?

Several factors contribute to the overall affordability of online doctoral programs. Below are four of the most significant factors to consider. However, keep in mind that there may be exceptions, so it’s important not to dismiss any program before examining it in detail.

In-State vs. Out-of-State Residency

Since public colleges and universities receive a lot of their funding from state taxes, they normally charge a substantially higher tuition rate to out-of-state students. This is a good reason to check programs at schools in your state of residence first. However, some schools now charge a single rate to all students in online degree programs regardless of residency, so your out-of-state status may not be an eliminating factor.

Private vs. Public Universities

The general rule is that degrees from public colleges and universities are more expensive than their public school counterparts. For the most part, that rule still stands. However, our program rankings show this may be changing. Don’t automatically exclude doctorate programs simply because they’re from private schools.

Credits Required

Be sure to consider the total number of credits required. For example, EdD programs at  Evangel University  and  Southwest Baptist University  are $600 and $445 per credit respectively. However, the total required credits are 50 for Evangel’s program and 73 for Southwest Baptist’s program. So, the total tuition cost for Evangel ($30,000) is less than that for Southwest Baptist ($32,485). Both programs are still quite affordable, but the total cost may be a deciding factor.

Financial Aid Packages Offered by the School

Most students need some outside help to fund their doctorate studies. Fortunately, students enrolled in virtually all of the programs mentioned in this guide are eligible for federal financial aid, particularly student loans. Most schools also offer a range of other aid opportunities, like scholarships and grants, work-study programs, and in-house student loans. Fort Hays State University, for example, offers both nursing-exclusive scholarships and a loan forgiveness program to its DNP students.

Where to Get Funding for Your Online PhD or Professional Doctorate

Paying for an online doctorate can feel daunting, but there are many ways to lower your out-of-pocket costs and make earning your degree a reality. Several of the most common funding opportunities are detailed below but be sure to investigate  Financial Aid for Doctoral Students  in more depth before beginning your program.

Scholarships & Grants

Scholarships and grants are popular mainly because you don’t pay them back. They’re available from a range of sources, sometimes even the colleges and universities themselves. Check each school’s website for available scholarships and grants along with the  Scholarships & Grants for Doctoral Students  available regardless of where you attend.

Doctoral Fellowships

Doctoral fellowships are merit-based awards that provide financial support to doctorate students to help pay for their continued studies. As opposed to assistantships, fellowships usually do not require students to take on teaching or research responsibilities in exchange for the award. Learn more about how to land a great doctoral fellowship in this  PhD Student’s Guide to Fellowships .

Employer Tuition Reimbursement

Employers highly value good employees and frequently aim to support their career advancement, particularly when it’s within their own organizations. Consequently, many companies offer employer tuition reimbursement programs for their most valuable employees, covering some or all of the tuition fees in exchange for a commitment to work for the company for a specified period. Speak with your supervisor or HR department to determine if tuition reimbursement is accessible to you.

Student Loans

The student loan is the most common type of financial aid for all degree programs. The biggest source of student loans is the federal government. For grad students, that usually means the  Direct PLUS Loan . Some schools offer in-house loans for their students as well. Contact your school’s financial aid office for information on student loan availability.

Most Affordable Doctorate Programs - fact

Finding an online Ph.D. program directly related to your profession can be difficult, but it is possible if you ask the correct questions.

Once you’ve reduced your options down to a few key players, you’ll want to take a few more steps to evaluate the program entirely—and the results you can expect. It is best to meet or speak with the program chair and ask five significant questions concerning its accrediting authenticity and the student experience.

  • Are you accredited on a regional or national level? And what is the state of your accreditation?
  • How easy is it to get in touch with the mentors here?
  • What is it like to be an online student at this university?
  • What resources will I have access to as part of this program?
  • Will I be able to get help with my dissertation?

If you have any worries about the accrediting agency’s legality, check to see if it is recognized by one of two authorities: the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or the U.S. Department of Education . The latter features a College Navigator service that allows students to check the accreditation of any institution they are thinking about attending.

The cost of tuition for online Ph.D. programs varies. Costs are affected by various factors, including program length, available financial aid, and whether the school is private or public. Doctoral programs typically provide more financial assistance than master’s programs. According to EducationData.org , the average cost of a Ph.D. degree is $114,300. However, you can find a quality program with tuition costs of approximately $400 to $600 per credit hour.

Many institutions provide financial aid to full-time online Ph.D. students, and there are no differences in application, requirements, or qualifications between on-campus and online programs. In general, doctoral students are eligible for student loans, assistantships, and scholarships. Furthermore, many corporations/companies assist their employees who desire to pursue a Ph.D. and help finance students’ tuition and research fees.

Interested students can apply for various scholarships to assist their studies. The six grants listed below are just a few examples of scholarships that might help students avoid debt.

An overview of the doctorate degree, why get an online doctorate degree.

Many doctoral candidates have already reached more advanced stages in their career. The online doctorate is a great way to continue in your education while remaining active in your career. Online doctoral degree programs are often tailored to the scheduling needs of working professionals. This means that you may be able to complete your online doctorate while still earning a living. This can help offset your dependence on financial aid options and, ultimately, reduce your student loan debt.

What kinds of online doctoral degree programs are there?

Online doctoral degree programs are offered in a variety of disciplines including business administration, health sciences, computer science, and more. Some doctoral degree programs do not naturally lend themselves to online learning, but for those that do, it may be possible to choose from a variety of affordable online doctorate degrees.

What can you do with a doctoral degree?

Earning a doctorate qualifies you to work at the highest levels in your field including executive leadership business, consultation in public affairs, work as a university professor, or a career spent in research. Depending on your area of concentration, your online doctoral program could allow you to contribute to important economic research, participate in major long-term public health surveys, or provide R&D leadership to a major consumer brand.

What are the admission requirements for an online doctorate degree program?

The admission requirements for online doctoral degree programs are the same as those for a traditional doctorate degree. The bachelor’s degree is typically the basic threshold for entry into a doctoral program. Most reputable online doctoral degree programs will also require a strong academic track record and a minimum undergraduate GPA. Pursuing an online PhD program can provide flexibility and convenience for working professionals and parents.

However, earning a doctoral degree remotely also raises many questions about cost, financial aid, legitimacy, and more.

The section below answers some of the most frequently asked questions about affordable online PhD options .

What are some of the cheapest online doctorate programs?

While tuition costs vary, some particularly affordable options include:

  • North Carolina A&T State University’s online Doctor of Philosophy program charges just $233 per credit hour for in-state students.
  • Columbia Southern University offers doctoral programs starting at $435 per credit hour, including textbooks and eBooks.
  • Many schools provide financial assistance, which can lower out-of-pocket costs for online learners. Checking a program’s aid opportunities is advisable.

Can I get financial aid for an online PhD program?

Yes, financial aid, including scholarships, grants, work-study, and loans, is often available for online doctoral students–some of which are known as “ fully funded online PhD programs “. Steps to take:

  • Complete the FAFSA if the program/school accepts it.
  • Research scholarships and grants specifically for online learners.
  • Ask about aid directly through the school or program.
  • Explore employer education benefits and professional development funds.

Are online PhD programs seen as legitimate credentials?

Absolutely. Top schools like Stanford, Columbia, and MIT now offer online doctorates. Be sure to verify:

  • The program has valid accreditation .
  • The school is non-profit and regionally accredited.
  • Past graduates found career success after earning their degrees .

A small number of schools provide full funding for select on-campus Ph.D. students. But free online options besides the GI Bill for veterans are very limited. Realistically, expect to pay some tuition costs unless you secure a full scholarship or grant.

Affordable online Ph.D. programs do exist but require diligent research. Seeking aid and evaluating total costs are key steps for remote doctoral students.

Finding an affordable online Ph.D. is possible with research and utilizing all financial aid opportunities available. Being flexible about the school and program can also help you find the best value.
