The Best Nursing Bras

Ali Carr

By Ali Carr

The cups of a nursing bra unclip or pull open to make it easy for you to bring a feeding baby to the breast.

We spent six months testing 24 nursing bras with a panel of 17 moms ranging in size from 32D up to 42K (and including 36B and 34C) and found that the best nursing bras are the seamless Cake Lingerie Cotton Candy and Bravado Designs Body Silk , the underwire Hotmilk Forever Yours , the wireless Hotmilk Show Off , and the sleep-friendly Kindred Bravely French Terry Racerback .

Everything we recommend

nursing bra

Cake Lingerie Cotton Candy

Of all of the seamless bras we tested, none felt as supportive and comfortable as the Cake Lingerie Cotton Candy . The soft bra’s higher than usual spandex content makes it incredibly resistant to stretching out—even when you sleep in it. The top of the bra sits higher than most, accommodating engorgement in the first few weeks of nursing and keeping you from spilling out then and later on. In the world of seamless bras—which are among the most comfortable but least structured options—designs are so basic that women with larger busts suffer. The Cotton Candy has built-in features like a full back and knit panels in the shape of underwire, making this a supportive option for the entire size range of this bra—S to XL, spanning 32B to 42F.

Of all the bras we tested, none gave us better shape under a T-shirt than the Hotmilk Forever Yours . Its design is clean and simple, with just enough padding to hide nipples, flexible underwire that supports and lifts while also adjusting to size fluctuations, one of the most adjustable bands among all the bras we looked at, and cotton lining the interior of the cups, adding breathability and softness. The Forever Yours comes in sizes 32A to 38F.

With its highly effective construction, the Hotmilk Show Off outperformed all the other wireless models we looked at in terms of support and lift, and bested a few underwire bras as well. It has one of the widest size ranges available in a structured nursing bra and feels so unrestrictive that a few of our testers even slept in it comfortably. Design features like the breathable cotton lining, higher coverage A-frame, and streamlined lace detailing helped make it a favorite of our testers, who all genuinely like the way the bra makes them look and feel, which is not true of any other bra we tested. Available in sizes 28B to 46I.

Many of the nine sleep bras we tested have too much going on—body mapping, hook-and-eye attachments, lace trim, liner fabrics—which made us appreciate the Kindred Bravely French Terry Racerback for prioritizing softness, support, convenience, and not much else. This bra is easy to pull aside for middle-of-the-night feedings, yet has enough stretch and tautness to retain nursing pads without trouble and keep you from spilling out when you’re not nursing. It feels more like a second skin than any other bra we tried. Available in 28B to 42G.

The design of the Bravado Designs Body Silk is clean, its nylon-spandex fabric is stretchy yet supportive, and the bra comes in one of the widest color ranges we’ve seen. Most important, its sizing chart is accurate, unlike those of some other brands, making this bra easy to order online. But although we love the sporty V-neck shape, we think most people will feel more secure wearing the higher neckline of our main seamless pick. We also found that the Bravado’s sling strap offers far less support while nursing than our main pick’s more substantial triangle-shaped sling. Available in S to XL, accommodating 32B to 42F.

To understand the world of nursing bras as a whole, I started by polling six Facebook groups specifically for moms. Two of these groups, Milky Mamas Breastfeeding Support and Breastfeeding Mamas , are nursing-specific and have tens of thousands of members.

I also interviewed certified lactation consultant Jenn Sullivan , who owned Waddle n Swaddle, a baby store that offers breastfeeding classes and support groups and has three brick-and-mortar locations in New York’s Hudson Valley, at the time of our interview. At the beginning of my research, I went into the Rhinebeck, New York, branch to interview one of their fitters, and got fitted myself.

To brush up on fabrics and fabric science, I spoke with Fran Kozen , an expert at the Cornell Institute for Fashion and Fiber Innovation. I also interviewed the bra designers at Cake Maternity and Hotmilk to better understand the design functionalities built into some of our favorite bras.

I was no stranger to nursing bras when I started researching this guide; I was then the mom of two small kids, the latter of whom I nursed until she was 2.

nursing bra

The majority of breastfeeding moms will purchase at least one nursing bra for the months and/or years after a baby is born. Bras designed specifically for nursing provide easier access for feeding than regular bras do, and support breasts through size fluctuations, heaviness, and leakage. (Some breastfeeding moms prefer to go braless—reasoning that it’s one less thing to deal with when you’re nursing frequently, and one less thing to buy. There are also people who find that a sports bra is easy to lift up and pull down, and even cut out holes to turn them into pumping bras .)

Though you may use nursing bras for a couple of years at most, you’ll likely use these garments daily during that time, so it’s worth getting something that’s comfortable and fits correctly. Unlike regular bras, most nursing bras are equipped with clasps where the cup meets the strap that make it easy to access your breasts without having to remove your bra. Or, some nursing bras simply allow you to pull the cups aside for breast access. Many nursing bras are also designed for extra adjustability and flexibility, with multiple rows of hooks and super-stretchy fabrics that can accommodate rib cage expansion and contraction and weight gain and loss.

nursing bra

Bras designed to be unclasped instead of pulled aside for nursing either come with a sling along the inside of the cup or have A-frame-shaped cups. Both of these keep shoulder straps in place and out of your baby’s face while you’re nursing.

nursing bra

Some styles of nursing bra are better suited to postpartum bodies than others. More forgiving, stretchier style bras (which tend to be sized S to XL+) are good options for your initial weeks and months of nursing, when your body is regulating your milk supply to support your baby’s needs. Their fabric can accommodate a wider range of sizes than a band-and-cup-sized bra .

For your first nursing bra, we suggest sticking with a bra sized S to XL+, which will cover a large range of band-and-cup sizes. You can expect your breasts to become engorged within the initial week or so of having a baby, but don’t make the mistake of getting a much larger bra when this happens. Your breasts will decrease in the weeks that follow once your milk supply stabilizes (and then your impulse purchase will be saggy and sad).

After a couple of weeks, you can expect smaller fluctuations in breast size throughout the day. Seamless, sleep, and wireless options can all deliver comfort, support, and even some level of feeling put together, if that’s important to you. This is a good time to purchase several nursing bras (some specialty bra stores will provide a fitting). Be careful when referring to Amazon’s size chart when ordering online, however, as it’s not specific to any bra; we recommend using the size chart on the bra maker’s site or product page. Three bras is a good number to have while you’re still breastfeeding, as milk will undoubtedly end up on them and they’ll need to be washed frequently.

nursing bra

In general, we found that there are five types of nursing bras:

Seamless: The most popular type for nursing moms (according to our poll), seamless bras are generally made of synthetic material that stretches to accommodate breast size fluctuation. They provide more support than bras made for sleeping, but not as much as underwire or wireless bras. Many come with removable cups for masking nipples and hook-and-eye-closures for getting a snug fit, and have latches where the band meets the strap for easy nursing access.

Underwire: Sized by band and cup, underwire nursing bras are similar to regular underwire bras except that they have clasps where the cup meets the bra strap, and may have more hook-and-eye points of attachment. A good underwire nursing bra should have wire that curves in more gently toward the armpit compared with that of a traditional underwire bra, and the best ones have flexible wire to allow for the size fluctuations that accompany nursing. Ideally, you should get fitted at a bra store to ensure that you’re wearing the proper size, as overly tight clothing is a cause of clogged ducts according to the World Health Organization (PDF). Lactation consultant and baby-store owner Jenn Sullivan recommends spending a little more in this category. “Underwire bras under $50 might have questionable wire, and you risk problems,” she said. Many moms we talked to said they felt comfortable moving into underwire nursing bras around nine months postpartum, when they were nursing only a few times a day.

Wireless: Wireless bras provide support through fabric, shaping, and seams, and are sized by band and cup, like underwire bras. Like underwire, they offer lift and padding but without as much potential for clogged ducts (as long as they’re not too tight). These bras also have clasps at the straps, and many have extra hook-and-eye closures.

Crossover style: These simple, hardware-free bras use fabrics ranging from synthetics to cotton and are generally the best and most comfortable for sleeping. Though the primary function of these bras is to give you support at night—they hold pads for collecting leaky milk and make nursing incredibly easy because you simply pull the cup aside—of course you can use them during the day as well if you’re not concerned about wearing a bra that provides lift or shape. Crossover bras are typically pulled on over your head and are sized S to XL+.

Although we did a little research on nursing sports bras, we didn’t include them in this guide, which is focused on everyday nursing bras. And if it’s a pumping bra you’re looking for, head to our guide  The Best Pumping Bra .

We also didn’t look at nursing tanks for this guide, though we may include them in a future update. Lactation consultant Jenn Sullivan says she often sees women who have clogs from these because the built-in bra is too tight. If your bra forms indentations like those you might get from too tight socks, it’s too small across the breasts and could cause clogs.

nursing bra

I started by polling a variety of Facebook groups for moms—including nursing-specific groups with thousands of members—on their preferred nursing bras and why they liked them. I then read reviews of best-selling models on retail sites including Amazon, Nordstrom, Target, A Pea in the Pod, and Motherhood.

I also studied up on Babycenter , read Consumer Reports's Nursing Bra Buying Guide , looked at Lucie’s List’s Best Nursing Bras and Babble’s Mom Tested: The Best Nursing Bras (now defunct), and consulted La Leche League’s holy grail of all things nursing, The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding .

Once we had an initial list of popular brands, models, and feedback to work from, we polled the Facebook group members again, this time on which style of bra they wore as their everyday nursing bra, to help figure out where we should focus our attention. The options we presented were seamless, underwire, wireless, crossover, or other (with the ability to explain). Responses from our 317 poll-takers leaned heavily toward seamless bras (45 percent wear these every day), followed by underwire (27 percent), wireless (24 percent) and, finally, crossover style (4 percent), with a handful of comments about nursing tanks, sports bras, and going braless. (A delightful 2017 New Yorker essay provides some further arguments for embracing the possible joy of not wearing a bra ).

All of our research told us that above all else a nursing bra must be comfortable. To be comfortable for a wide range of people we found that a great nursing bra must offer:

Support: Moms we polled concurred that support is non-negotiable in a nursing bra, because lactating breasts can become very heavy. But the amount of support that should be reasonably expected varies based on bra type. Sleep style bras will naturally offer less support than seamless bras, which won’t offer as much support as wireless or underwire bras. If you’re larger than a DD cup, BabyCenter recommends seeking out a bra with straps wider than an inch in width to better distribute the weight, and reduce the risk of straps digging into your shoulders. Bras with fuller back coverage, wider bands, and racerbacks can also provide additional support by taking more weight off your shoulders. Ideally, you’ll hardly notice your bra is there.

Fit and adjustability: A nursing bra should fit like a regular bra (no sideboob, the whole breast covered by the cup) but should never compress the area between the armpit and the breast, as that’s where milk ducts are located. The band should fit flush against the skin and be neither too tight nor too loose, the former of which can create clogged ducts. Because breasts fluctuate in size throughout the postpartum period, the more adjustable a nursing bra is, the better. Straps should be adjustable enough that they neither dig into your shoulders to support your breasts nor are so loose that they slip down. A good nursing bra should have three to four more rows of hooks along the band than a regular bra so it can expand up to two additional band sizes.

Soft, breathable fabric: A great nursing bra should not be scratchy, itchy, hot, or swampy in warm weather. Nursing bras are largely made out of cotton, other cellulose fabrics (viscose, rayon, tencel), and/or synthetic materials (polyester, nylon, spandex) similar to those used in activewear. In dealing with leaks, most people won’t notice much difference in performance between these fabrics. The main differences among them are how they feel against your skin, how much they stretch out, and how much support they provide. “Cellulose fabrics … have a little bit of fuzziness so it feels good against the skin,” says Fran Kozen of the Cornell Institute for Fashion and Fiber Innovation. “You can brush a synthetic to give it fuzziness but some are rough to the touch and would be at a disadvantage for nipples, for instance.” Spandex (also known by the brand name Lycra and as elastane) helps the bras retain their shape and also provides extra support. Bras without absorbent layers and padding will tend to leak through to clothing but will also be more breathable and less hot.

Ease of use: A good nursing bra should provide easy access for nursing, which means it should be simple to unclasp and clasp one-handed. The cup should stay out of the way of the baby’s face and your bra strap should stay in place thanks to a sling or A-frame layer.

Good coverage: Nipples often become darker and larger when nursing (making it easier for the baby to spot them). For many moms, it’s important that a bra conceal them well. Underwire and wireless bras have thicker cups to conceal nipples. Seamless and crossover style bras tend to be relatively thin, and won’t be as effective for that purpose, though some seamless models do come with removable cups that can deliver a junior high-style padded bra effect (and can be hard to stuff back in after washing without crumpling or folding). Underwire and wireless bras should look similar to regular bras you might wear to work or under a T-shirt, providing a natural shape. Better seamless and sleep bras won’t give you uniboob.

Because we targeted nursing bras that cost well under $100, we didn’t place a lot of importance on price. Given that you’re likely to wear these several times a week for at least many months, and often for a year or more, we felt that any of these bras, if they performed well, would be a good value.

After we narrowed our most important features and had a solid crowdsourced and researched list of the most popular nursing bras available, we called in samples of 38 bras. We tried on each one to determine if it was true to size, took notes on our first impressions and inspected fabrics, seams, clasps, and hooks for quality. Through this process we were able to eliminate 14 models and ended up with a list of seven seamless bras, eight underwire bras, four wireless bras, and five crossover bras that we sent to our panel of testers.

We recruited 17 nursing moms with babies ranging in age from 2 weeks to just over 2 years old to help us test the 24 finalists. They live all over the country, from Massachusetts and New York to California and Oregon, and have different lifestyles. Our testers included junior high and preschool teachers, stay-at-home moms, part-time students, a midwife, college professors, and small-business owners. Most important, our panel of testers ranged from 32D to 42K with a good representation of B, C, D, DD, DDD, E, and F cups in band sizes like 34, 36, and 38 (the average bra size of non-nursing women in the US is 34DD). In most cases, we sent each bra to at least two testers in their respective sizes, aiming for one smaller-size and one larger-size tester. If a bra was as beloved by our 42K tester as it was by our 32D tester, it was superior to ones that won over only one end of the spectrum.

Testers gave us their initial thoughts on fit, style, and size. If the bra fit, they wore it for a week. We sent underwire bras only to moms who said they would wear that style anyway. After a week of testing, each mom filled out a questionnaire on the support, comfort, fit, and adjustability; fabric breathability and performance; ease of use, coverage, and appearance of the bra; as well as unique features and if they would purchase it, regardless of the price.

We relied on online reviews to evaluate the durability of each bra, and balanced existing overall evaluations of the bras with our testers’ experience and opinions when determining our picks. Our panelists will continue to wear our picks to see how they hold up over time.

nursing bra

If you’re going to pick one bra to pack for when the baby comes and to rely on in the weeks immediately following, we think the Cake Lingerie Cotton Candy should be it. The Cotton Candy’s high-coverage design and substantial construction offer more support than similar models we tested while also allowing for easy adjustment. Its stretchy fabric feels soft and forgiving—important for those first days, when engorgement is common—and its clasps are among the simplest to use. The bra comes in a wider range of sizes and colors than most of the models we tested. It doesn’t do much to mask nipples, though.

Though the Cotton Candy is made of a thin, stretchy fabric typical of seamless nursing bras, it provides greater support and a closer fit than similar models we tested. Its higher-than-most neckline allows for fluctuation in breast size—we never spilled out. Unlike other seamless bras we looked at, the Cotton Candy has a full-coverage back, which helps get more weight off your shoulders. It’s cut higher under the armpit than its competitors as well, which, as lactation consultant Jenn Sullivan tells us, adds extra support for mammary tissue. And although the front panel of other seamless bras, including our runner-up, is knit flat, with just a gusset in the center for shaping, the Cotton Candy has heat-molded cups to better fit the breasts’ contours instead of merely compressing them. We also appreciate the triangular-shaped sling, the most substantial among the seamless bras we looked at, which actually supports the breast a little during nursing (it’s not just there to hold your strap up).

In terms of fit, a keyhole in the back with three rows of hooks at its base allows the wearer to dial in the snugness of the band as needed. Our 38DDD tester mentioned how supported she felt because of the closure. “This is the lazy girl’s dream bra,” she said, noting that its fit is perfect for those first months postpartum when most moms aren’t doing many high-impact activities or getting dressed up very often.

nursing bra

“I’ve been wearing a Mazda and this is a Cadillac,” said one of our testers, who was adamant about wearing only cotton bralettes—until she put on this bra. The synthetic Cotton Candy is 90 percent nylon and 10 percent spandex and feels softer to the touch than any of the other seamless bras we tried. The higher than usual spandex content (others have about 8 percent) prevents the bra from stretching out throughout the day or night like 100 percent cotton bras do. In fact, we washed this bra far less often than other bras we tested because it held its shape so well.

Unlike most of the non-sleep nursing bras we tested, the Cotton Candy’s clasps are easy enough to undo that it could be a good option to wear overnight, especially if you’re not nursing as frequently. It’s also appropriate for low-key exercise; we found the fabric supportive and breathable enough to wear while doing some light baby-and-me yoga.

This bra comes in four sizes , S to XL, accommodating 32B to 42F, as well as in eight colors: heather gray with pink trim, steel gray, black, navy, beige, shell, aqua, and fuchsia.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

You have to pull this bra on over your head, as you would with sports bras with a similar racerback design. Also like with many sports bras, larger-size testers reported uniboob, although some said that didn’t bother them in a bra they primarily wore around the house. Unlike some bras, the Cotton Candy doesn’t come with removable cups, so any nursing pads you use will likely show through the thin fabric. And like other bras in this category, the bra doesn’t mask nipples much.

nursing bra

The Hotmilk Forever Yours sets itself apart from other underwire nursing bras through its thoughtful construction, which offers the best shaping of all the bras we tested and provides ample support while still accommodating breast-size changes throughout the day or over weeks and months. It’s one of the only underwire bras we tested that is true to size, and effectively combines cotton and synthetic fabrics for comfort, support, and moisture management. We liked its soft cotton lining better than any of the other underwire bra linings, which were mostly made of the same synthetic fabrics found on the bra exteriors. Its foam-lined cups provide the right amount of coverage (no spillage or sideboob like other bras in our test); it’s no-fuss when it comes to clasps and straps staying in place; and it looks—and works—like a regular underwire.

The flexible wire used in this bra is less rigid than the wire used in regular underwire bras. It bends as your bust changes throughout the day, yet is still strong enough to support and lift your breasts to provide shaping and support. Other underwire nursing bras we tested also have flexible wire, but this one felt the least restrictive.

nursing bra

This bra also has more rows of hooks on the band than any other bra we looked at, offering plenty of room for rib cage expansion (the hooks span three inches). Our testers found that the bra’s overall fit was spot-on, with no gaping and no digging in.

The multilayered construction of the cups takes advantage of the properties of both synthetics and cotton. The polyester-spandex exterior is supportive for heavy breasts and looks smoother under clothing than any of the other bras we tested, while the interior is lined with soft, breathable, polka-dotted cotton that absorbs leakage. A thin layer of foam is sandwiched between that cotton lining and the polyester-spandex exterior, making the cups thick enough to hide nipples and nursing pads, but not so thick that they feel bulky or create an unnatural silhouette. No other bra in our test gave such a smooth, round shape under T-shirts.

nursing bra

Of the models we looked at, this bra is among the easiest to unclasp, and the straps stay in place while nursing better than those of other bras we tested, a feature that was beloved by our 38DDD tester. Hotmilk adds extra width to the straps in size DD and larger.

The excellent fit and support of the Forever Yours earned praise from our testers and from online reviewers. “I’m typically quite self-conscious of how large my breasts look,” said our 38DDD tester. “More support helps with confidence. This bra is both supportive and comfortable.” One reviewer on Amazon, who calls the Forever Yours the “Perfect Everyday Bra,” writes , “It’s very difficult for me to find nursing bras in my size (32F/G) and when I do, they usually don’t work out. This bra is fantastic! It looks and feels like a regular bra. There is padding/molding in it that both blocks nipple show through and gives a natural shape.... Even with the padding, I’m easily able to fold it down (I fold each cup down twice) to nurse.”

This bra sizes up to only a 38F.

An Amazon reviewer who loves the bra overall nevertheless complains about a side effect of the layered construction: “The structure on the band and sides does seem a bit bulky and does not always lie completely flat under shirts, which also makes it really hot in the summer heat (it doesn’t [breathe] well).” All our testers found the Forever Yours breathable and effective at wicking moisture.

nursing bra

The Hotmilk Show Off performs better than all the other wireless models we looked at—and better than some underwire ones as well. Using shaping, seams, and a combination of synthetic and cotton fabrics, the Show Off is the best at providing both substantial support and a comfortable fit across one of the widest ranges of sizes available in a structured nursing bra. Like our other picks, this bra is also simple to clasp and unclasp for nursing.

For support, the Show Off relies on cups shaped through seams as well as by a wide band that provides a solid foundation, especially for larger busts. Stretchy nylon-spandex fabric contributes to the taut, supportive fit, while a soft cotton lining provides comfort and breathability (the lace is layered over the nylon-spandex). Shaping in the cup and power mesh—strong, stretchy fabric like that used in control-top pantyhose—in the back provide even more support where it’s needed most.

Like our main underwire pick, which is also made by Hotmilk, the Show Off is über-adjustable, with six rows of hooks, the maximum number we saw on the bras we considered. “With the extra-long band, I was able to adjust it to get a great fit,” said our 36DD tester. “Love that there are so many hooks so I’ll be able to wear it when I’m pregnant again and need some more room.” In larger sizes, the Show Off has wider straps to add more support.

This bra comes in a wide size range of 32B to 42H. Even our largest tester, who wore a 42G, was impressed by the bra’s support sans underwire and how it made her breasts look.

The Show Off’s nylon-spandex fabric stretches and contracts with breast size fluctuation better than any other bra in our test, and the cotton lining is soft and highly breathable. The bra’s A-frame layer makes it easier to stay covered up while nursing than the common sling construction does and keeps straps firmly in place. We also found the clasps easy to unlatch and latch with one hand.

nursing bra

Amazon reviewers and one of our testers weren’t thrilled with the way the lace can look lumpy under a shirt. A sprinkling of reviewers also note that the bra didn’t feel as supportive as our testers reported, and a few write that the edges of the straps cut into their shoulders.

nursing bra

No other bra we tested was as simple and comfortable for nighttime use as the clasp- and hook-free Kindred Bravely French Terry Racerback . It never committed the largest sleep-bra offense: being noticeable. The French terry sits perfectly like second skin, is baby-blanket soft, and stays supportive all night while also moving aside easily for feeding. The rayon fabric (from bamboo) combined with spandex makes the bra ultra-breathable, and it effectively absorbed moisture when we leaked. It’s one of the most affordable sleep bras we tested and can fit a wide range of sizes, from 28B to 42G.

We found that the French terry fabric is taut enough to offer the low-key support most nursing moms want overnight but doesn’t stretch out like other sleep bras we tested did. “I felt effortlessly supported,” our 42H tester said. The bra’s full-coverage racerback keeps everything in place, takes more of the weight off your shoulders than other similar bras do, and distributes it more comfortably across your back.

nursing bra

The Kindred Bravely’s French terry fabric not only provides support and good moisture absorbency, it’s also exceptionally cozy, as hundreds of Amazon reviewers attest. “French terry has extra loops, adding softness,” said fabric expert Fran Kozen. “It’s also very absorbent, which is what you want in a nursing bra.” No other bra we tested felt as soft as this one.

There aren’t any adjustment options on this bra, but we found it’s stretchy enough to accommodate the sizes it specifies.

Most of the small percentage of negative reviews on Amazon say it is difficult to find the right size when ordering this bra online, but many also note that customer service is responsive and helpful in getting problems sorted out. Some reviewers do complain about this bra stretching out too quickly, though a few say it regains its shape after being washed. A few reviewers find that the band’s lack of stretch makes it difficult to put on. A number of reviewers have also commented that the racerback sits uncomfortably high at the back of the neck, but the company recently updated the design so that it’s one inch lower.

nursing bra

The popular, comfortable Bravado Designs Body Silk has a flattering V-neck design, uses a relatively silky, sturdy fabric, and comes in a variety of color options—though we found that it’s a little less supportive than our main seamless pick . This bra is as adjustable as seamless bras get but has a skimpier sling than any other bra of its type we tested (it’s just an extension of the shoulder strap). It fits true to size. But it lacks the higher neckline of the Cotton Candy and thus isn’t quite as effective as our main pick at containing spillage.

The Bravado is slightly less supportive than our main seamless pick because it doesn’t offer quite as much coverage on the back and sides. However, testers reported that the U shape of the straps along the back help with lift. The bras’s stretchy nylon-spandex fabric is somewhat stiffer than that of most of the seamless bras in our test group, which adds support and helps keep nipples obscured but can also get in the way when you’re nursing. The single-strap slings effectively hold straps in place, though notably they don’t provide any support for your breasts.

This bra is not as soft as many of the other seamless bras we tested, including some less supportive options like the popular Motherhood Maternity seamless bras. Our testers’ feedback forms for the Bravado were littered with the word “fine”: It doesn’t have any of the standout features—like an extra-soft feel, or high breathability—that other bras testers were enamored of have.

Sizing is often a major problem when it comes to buying nursing bras—many run big or small or don’t fit at all—but large numbers of reviewers report that this bra offers a good fit and runs true to size—making it especially easy to order online.

Some of our testers noted the nursing clips on the Bravado required more effort to undo than those on other bras, and especially compared with our main seamless pick, but online reviewers generally found them painless to use. Our testers liked the shape of this bra—it’s more of a subtle V than a scoop neck—finding it sportier and more flattering than other seamless bras they tried.

The Cake Lingerie Rock Candy (S to XL accommodates 32B to 42F) offers double-knit yarn for strength and support, nonslip straps, and body-mapped strength panels combined with soft cup areas. But our seamless pick has features—like a higher neckline for larger busts and an extra-supportive racerback—that give it the edge over this bra.

Testers liked the Ingrid & Isabel Seamless Drop Cup Back Clasp (S to XL, accommodating 32A to 40F), but it runs small and quality control seems questionable—one of our samples came unraveled at the clip on day one of testing.

Not quite a traditional seamless bra, not quite a wireless bra either, the Royce Lingerie Candy Blossom (32C to 40H) falls somewhere in between. Our testers felt more supported in it than in other seamless bras we tested (one mom who loves Royce told us it was one of the only brands that holds her E/F breasts up). But the bra delivers a uniboob shape, and testers were annoyed by the little string down the center of the bra that can be pulled to add ruching.

Neither the Paramour Cecile (S to XXL accommodating 32A to 40DD) nor the Belly Bandit Bandita (S to XL accommodating 34B to 38H) provides as much support or is as comfortable as our main seamless pick and runner-up.

Our D-cup testers complained that the minimalist Motherhood Maternity Seamless Clip-Down (S to XL accommodating 34 to 40 in B and C cups only; the full-bust version accommodates 34 to 44 in D and G cups) doesn’t provide enough support and that it creates uniboob.

The supersoft fabric of the Kindred Bravely Simply Sublime (S to 3XL, accommodating 30B to 46I) was a favorite among testers—but reviews on Amazon and Kindred Bravely’s site indicate that it snags easily and doesn’t hold up in the wash.

The Boob Fast Food (S to XL accommodating 32A to 42G) comes in leopard print, polka dot, and striped patterns and offers a wide-band version for light exercise like yoga and walking. But it lacks support and coverage compared with our seamless pick.

We love the look of the Leading Lady Stylish Cotton Seamless Athleisure (S to 5X, accommodating 32A to 48C) and found it very supportive, but the fabric is too stiff and rough to be comfortable.

The Bella Materna Pretty Sexy (32C to 38H; discontinued) is incredibly lightweight, very breathable, and thick enough to conceal nipples, but multiple testers noted that the fabric is irritatingly scratchy.

Like some Amazon reviewers, we had issues with the fit of the Freya Pure Underwire (30D to 40I), and also found complaints about the poor quality and lack of durability.

The Paramour Carol (36D to 42DDD) fits like our also great pick , but has thinner cup fabric. Its main flaw is that the lace along the bottom rolls up under the band and chafes your abdomen.

Testers were split on the lacy Le Mystère Sexy Mama (32C to 40F). Some felt the cups were too small and wide, others found them pointy, though some testers loved the way their breasts were supported whether full of milk or pancake flat after nursing. However, the fit didn’t work for enough testers to make it a pick.

Testers loved the clean and sophisticated look of the breathable Le Mystère Mama Mia (32D to 38G), but everyone agreed that the way the padded part comes only three-quarters of the way up behind the netting is awkward. Also, the cups run small, making breasts bulge under the netting.

The Elomi Smoothing Underwire (34E to 48E) is one of the only bras that can accommodate the largest bra sizes, but it has so much fabric that our testers found it bunchy when they didn’t fill it out all the way—even if they were wearing the appropriate size. The fabric—polyester with some nylon and spandex—is itchy and, worst of all, the clasps are impossible to undo with one hand.

With just a single front closure, the Thirdlove 24/7 Classic (32C to 40C) doesn’t have the level of adjustability that other nursing bras do. Also, the bra’s stretchy knit fabric lacks support in the band and makes the cups gap.

We just couldn’t get the Cake Croissant (32C to 42I) to fit. We tried the 34D bra on a 34D tester, but there was too much fabric in the cups. We sent it to our 34E tester who also felt it was too bunchy. So, we ordered a 34C for the 34D tester and we still got bunchy cups. As a last resort, our 36DD tester wore the 34C bra, noting it was too small but she still liked the stretchy, comfortable fabric and found it absorbed small leaks well. Beyond the trouble with fit, several customers write that the wire eventually wore through the fabric.

Cake’s  Truffles bra (32B to 38F), which has a plunging neckline and swirly lace, also has cups that stick out on the sides like wings, we found.

The Anita Fleur has a reputation among online reviewers: torpedo ta-tas. We concur. This bra’s cups run a little large and pointy. The fabric is thin and the underwire feels like it’s shaped for a regular bra.

The simple Rosie Pope Wireless Lightly Lined (34B to 40DD) offers support somewhere between that of seamless and underwire bras, which made it very comfortable. But its lukewarm reviews on Amazon (especially regarding durability) meant we decided not to panel test this bra.

The Kindred Bravely Marvella (32B to 38E; discontinued) pulls over your head like a sleep bra but has molded cups like a regular bra—and many women find it ultra-comfortable. Our main complaint is that, although the band is stretchy enough to accommodate size fluctuations, it has no adjustability hooks at all. And the molded cups are so upright, they won’t stay out of our baby’s way while nursing.

The structured seams on the Hotmilk Luminous (32B to 42D; currently unavailable) don’t feel as supportive as they look, and the seam lines show through shirts. Plus, its dangling rhinestones, silky fabric and bow were not universally liked.

The Royce Lingerie Charlotte (28DD to 40L) is available in a wider size range than any other wireless bra we considered, but consensus among our testers and Amazon reviewers is that it runs small. The fabric is a scratchy polyester along the band and the cups are a bit narrow.

The ThirdLove 24/7 Wireless (32C to 40C; discontinued) is almost identical to the same company’s underwire version, and likely a better option for women who are still nursing a lot. We had the same qualms with it as we did with the underwire one—no adjustability in the band size with only one hook attachment in the front and unsupportive fabric.

The Belly Bandit BDA (S to XL accommodating 34B to 38H) is basically the synthetic version of our sleep pick . The Kindred Bravely gets our vote because the French terry is buttery soft, and the bra costs $10 less.

Though the Cake Lingerie Milk Bamboo (S to XL accommodating 32B to 40B) is impressive in its softness and its ability to wick leaked milk away from breasts, its band, which is a separate piece of fabric, has the annoying tendency of riding up in the middle of the night.

The Rosie Pope Sleep (S to XL accommodating 34B to 40DDD) has hook-and-eye closures that allowed all our testers to get a close, supportive fit. But those same closures are uncomfortable to sleep on. We found that the cups run a little small, and because the material is slippery, some larger busted reviewers noted their breasts slipped out at night.

Rough stitching on the Bravado Designs Ballet (S to XL accommodating 32B to 46F) rubbed us at night, making us want to ditch this thing. Quality issues are a common refrain in online reviews, and the sizing runs a little small.

The Ingrid & Isabel Seamless Crossover (S to L accommodating 32A to 40F) supported our testers and stayed in place all night. But, like the brand’s seamless bra, this one’s fabric isn’t as soft as that of others we tested.

The Leading Lady Crossover (S to 4X accommodating 32A to 42F; discontinued) is incredibly similar to the Ingrid & Isabel Seamless bra but without a few of the ruching details that add support in that model.

The Medela Nursing Sleep Bra (S to XL, accommodating 32D to 44C) is the least expensive of the bras we tested, but not a good value. It’s not supportive in the least, rolls up during the night, and is the thinnest bra we tested.

You will likely want to wash your nursing bras more frequently than your regular bras, given the probability that milk will end up on them. Use cold water. Don’t put your bras in the dryer. Heat can stretch out elastic, making your bras wear out much sooner than necessary.

Best Nursing Bras, According to the Experts and Real Moms

Looking for a comfortable nursing bra that fits these tips will help you pick the right one for your needs..

author-Latifah Miles

By Latifah Miles

When you’re nursing, your breasts will take on a life of their own. Haven’t fed your little one in a while? You’ll notice they’re swollen and rock-hard. Just finished nursing? They’ll become smaller and soft again. Nursing bras are designed to deal with the literal ups and downs of breastfeeding , with comfortable and stretchy fabric, and provide easy access for feeding sessions with pull-down clasps or push-aside cups.

We talked to a lactation consultant, an OB-GYN, a mom with 40 months of breastfeeding under her belt and Babylist staffers to find the most comfortable, well-fitted, and most importantly, convenient nursing bras for breastfeeding or pumping.

How to Choose a Nursing Bra

Like regular bras, nursing bras come in a few different styles, and which one you pick is a matter of personal preference. You can choose from underwire or wireless, lined or unlined, and shaped cups or seamless. Dr. Franziska Haydanek , OB-GYN and mom of three, says that considering your lifestyle is also something to keep in mind before choosing one bra over another. Instead of choosing a separate bra for different areas of your life—like one for lounging at home, one to wear under professional clothing and one to wear when you’re sleeping—Dr. Haydanek suggests choosing one or two that can work across the spectrum of your nursing journey.

Lastly, and possibly most importantly, the fit of your bra is critical, Kristin Krahl, Certified Lactation Consultant and mom tells us.

“Choosing a bra that is too structured can apply unnecessary pressure to our breasts not allowing them to expand comfortably, and can absolutely cause us pain and potential issues,” Krahl says.

Additionally, Cinthia Scott, RD, IBCLC , says that ill-fitting bras “can lead to clogged ducts or mastitis,” so you should always prioritize comfort and a proper fit.

While figuring out your size will vary depending on the brand, bra style, and material, Dr. Haydanek says that you can start with your normal bra size and, since your ribcage expands during pregnancy, “people will probably notice that they need to go up with a band size from before and that bras that typically fit around their ribcage before may not fit anymore just because of that expansion.”

Many nursing bras are made from thin, stretchy material that is designed to accommodate any size fluctuation so there is some wiggle room when it comes to cup sizing. And if you’re throwing pumping in the mix, there are also specialty nursing bras that can pair with the flanges of your pump for hands-free pumping sessions.

How We Chose the Best Nursing Bras

When should i buy a nursing bra, how many nursing bras should i buy, do i need a nursing bra, what to look for in nursing bras, best nursing and pumping bra.

Bodily The Do Anything Bra - $58.00.

Bodily The Do Anything Bra

When Bodily named this the “Do Anything” bra, they really meant it. Nursing bras are designed to be worn like a regular bra, with most of them being even more comfortable than the average bra. But pumping bras on the other hand are not well known for their comfort — which is where The Do Anything Bra comes in.

Highly recommended by Scott, the Do Anything bra will carry you “from pregnancy through lactation and beyond” and “the comfort is unmatched while also making you still feel stylish in the throes of postpartum,” Scott says. The cups unclip and fold down for breastfeeding, but they also separate in the middle so you can easily insert the flanges of your breast pump for hands-free pumping. This bra is a great option to cover your bases if you’re not sure yet whether you’ll be breastfeeding, pumping, or both.

And no need to worry about pump parts, bottles, and milk falling out; this bra is super supportive, so even after pumping a full five ounces, everything will still stay in place without you needing to hold it up yourself. One thing to keep in mind: because of the way the cups are designed to accommodate pump flanges, this bra doesn’t have a seamless look underneath tight tops. This bra looks best under loose or flowy clothing.

Third Love 24/7 Classic Nursing Bra - $72.00.

Third Love 24/7 Classic Nursing Bra

Known for bringing comfy, stylish bras right to your doorstep, Third Love has really upped their game in the nursing bra department. The 24/7 Classic T-Shirt Bra, their most popular one by far, has been redesigned to make it suitable for nursing. This bra is perfect for all-day wear with comfortable, no-slip straps and supportive underwire cups, and it looks completely seamless no matter what you’re wearing on top of it. And if you’re unsure about wearing a nursing bra with an underwire (we know that there is a lot of back and forth on that topic), Scott says that you should opt for one that is “comfy and has stretchy material to prevent prolonged pressure on areas of the breast which can contribute to issues.”

Lined with ultra-thin memory foam, the cups form to your breasts for a just-for-you fit. Still not convinced? Their amazing “wear it, wash it, and if you don’t love it, send it back” return policy makes it super convenient to find the perfect fit without ever having to leave your living room.

Best Padded Nursing Bra

Auden Nursing Seamless Bra - $16.99+.

Auden Nursing Seamless Bra

Nursing pads can be a pain but a necessary one when you’re trying to catch potential leaks and unexpected letdowns. With this padded nursing bra by Target’s in-house brand Auden, you can retire your nursing pads. The wire-free bra has cups that are sewn in place, so you don’t have to worry about that annoying shifting and the need to re-adjust. And if you have a sudden leak, Dr. Haydanek says that this bra will keep it from bleeding through your shirt. “I very specifically like this one because it has sewn-in thicker cups. So especially for those who have just a little bit of leakage during feeding, it catches it without having to wear any nursing pads,” Dr. Haydanek tells us. The bra goes up to a size XL and the straps can be worn over your shoulders or in a criss-cross, so you can really pair it with most tops.

Best Wireless Nursing Bra

AVYN Foxy Wireless Nursing Bra - $54.00.

AVYN Foxy Wireless Nursing Bra

If you’re looking for a nursing bra that’s both comfortable and stylish, look no further than the Foxy bra from newcomer brand AVYN. Made by two moms who wanted nothing more than comfortable maternity wear that also fit their non-maternity style (hint: not beige or bland), AVYN combines super soft, stretchy fabric with a fun cross-back design, so you get plenty of room for movement, easy one-handed pull-down nursing access and a little sense of style.

Keep in mind: While this bra is great for those with small to medium breasts and band sizes, they don’t currently have sizes that work well for large breasts over 38DD.

Best Hands-Free Pumping Bra

Kindred Bravely Sublime Hands Free Pumping Bra - Beige, 1X.

Kindred Bravely Sublime Hands Free Pumping Bra - Beige, 1X

Frequent pumping is time-consuming, and with an average of 160 minutes of daily pump-holding, your hands have better things to do. This hands-free pumping bra from Kindred Bravely is a huge favorite among Babylist parents and staffers alike because of its super soft fabric, underwire-free comfort, and ability to support flanges from all major breast pump brands — wearable pumps included. Babylist associate editor Briana Engelbrecht says that, as “someone with preexisting large breasts,” she needed support as well as “easy nursing access” and this bra did it for her. And after four years, she says it’s so comfortable that she still wears it.

This hands-free pumping bra also doubles as a regular nursing bra so you can nurse and pump at the same time, leaving both of your hands free to hold baby. And since it feels like a cozy nursing bra, you can wear it all day.

Best Nursing Sleep Bra

Ingrid + Isabel Cooling Crossover Nursing Bra - $44.00.

Ingrid + Isabel Cooling Crossover Nursing Bra

If you’ve been wondering why it feels like you’re still waking up in a pool of sweat even after you’ve had your baby, it’s because your body temperature continues to stay elevated while you’re breastfeeding. Since comfortably sleeping in a heat wave for one is nearly impossible, we love this naturally cooling nursing bra that you can wear during the day and while you sleep. Wireless and hook-free, this bra is made of patented Brrr fabric — which is a nylon that is permanently cool to the touch. The fabric is also moisture-wicking and fast-drying, so you don’t have to worry about any breast milk leaks while you catch some Zs.

Best Nursing Bra for Small Breasts

Aerie Mama By Aerie Nursing Bra - $33.71.

Aerie Mama By Aerie Nursing Bra

Extra fabric and bulky padding can make gaining access to your breast for a nursing session way more difficult than it has to be, says Jacqui Dinardo, blogger and mom with over 40 months of breastfeeding under her belt. “Someone with a smaller bust should look for removable pads (the shape and support aren’t always needed),” Dinardo tells us. The Mama by Aerie nursing bra is made of lightweight nylon blend fabric and has removable, organic cotton machine-washable nursing pads that you can easily slide in and out. “The fabric has a barely there feel and is a great alternative to a triangle bralette,” which is ideal for smaller breasts says Dinardo.

Best Stretchy Nursing Bra

Larken The Black Larken X - $48.00.

Larken The Black Larken X

When I asked our Babylist staff to tell me about their favorite nursing bra, the Larken X was raved about the most. “I’m Larken obsessed. I started wearing them a few months postpartum, never stopped, and I am still wearing them (my son just turned 2 and I’m late third trimester with another baby)” our senior newsletter editor Alainna Wurfel says. Unlike the other bras on our list, the Larken X is double-lined, so when you’re ready to pump or nurse (or both, hands-free), there are no clips to deal with. Instead, you’ll just pull both layers down from the top or pull them up from the bottom for breastfeeding. For pumping, you’ll pull one of the layers up and the other layer down on each breast, creating an X shape and snuggly place your pump’s flange . The tension of the crossed fabric will hold everything in place.

With the possibility of your breasts growing as much as two full cup sizes during pregnancy, and the shape and firmness changing depending on their fullness, this bra does a fantastic job keeping up with constant fluctuations. And since this bra actually looks like a cropped tank top instead of a traditional bra, you can wear it on its own or underneath your clothing.

Best Nursing Cami

Cake Maternity Toffee Shaping Pregnancy & Nursing Tank Top for Breastfeeding with Built in Bra (for B-G Cups) - Black, X-Large - $64.00.

Cake Maternity Toffee Shaping Pregnancy & Nursing Tank Top for Breastfeeding with Built in Bra (for B-G Cups) - Black, X-Large

If you prefer more coverage and a held-together feel, this comfy cami provides support for your breasts as well as a bit of shaping for your entire torso. The built-in shelf bra has seamless, fabric-molded cups to support your breasts, with drop-down cups for easy breastfeeding, and a side sling for shape. This camisole is also longer than average, so you can rest assured that your midsection stays fully covered. The adjustable straps help you get the right fit, and the nylon and elastane (aka, spandex) fabric provides a rigid stretch that will conform comfortably to your curves without riding up.

Best Bra for Occasional Pumping

Simple Wishes Hands Free Breastpump Bra - Pink, Xs-L - $39.00.

Simple Wishes Hands Free Breastpump Bra - Pink, Xs-L

If you’re pumping only once or twice a day, or even just a few times a week, this bra gets the hands-free pumping job done without the need to wear a pumping bra all day. It’s compatible with most major breast pumps, and although it does convert to a regular bra using the included straps, it’s not our choice for long-time wear. Most parents just zip it over their nursing bra (cup flaps down) when they’re ready to pump, then take it off when finished. The best feature of this bra is that it’s basically one-size-fits-all thanks to the super stretchy back panel.

  • We utilized insight from the Babylist editorial team, including Latifah Miles , Senior Commerce Editor and mom of two, who has more than five years of experience researching, reviewing and writing about baby products, and Senior Gear Editor Jen LaBracio , an expert in the baby space for over six years and a mom of two who has written hundreds of baby gear guides and personally researched and tested hundreds of baby products.
  • We consulted the experts, including two lactation consultants, a mom with over 40 months of breastfeeding experience and an OB-GYN.
  • We reviewed customer reviews from hundreds of real Babylist parents.

Since your breast size and shape are likely to change during pregnancy, your nursing bra can double as a maternity bra, so you can opt to purchase them while you’re pregnant and get more bang for your buck. If you’re nursing for the first time and aren’t sure what your breast size will be once your milk regulates, however, it’s a good idea to start with one or two bras in the beginning and buy the rest about six weeks postpartum, when your milk has come in and settled down.

Similar to figuring out when to buy nursing bras, the quantity depends on a few factors. Since nailing down your size before your milk comes in or regulates is nearly impossible, both Dr. Haydanek and Dinardo suggest starting off with just a couple of bras, to begin with.

“I wouldn’t go and buy 10 bras within the first month, I would buy a couple to get comfortable,” Dr. Haydanek says. By week four through week six, your milk supply should be regulated, making it easier for you to figure out what size you are.

Once you can accurately determine your size, Dinardo says that you’ll want to have at least two bras in rotation.

“Regular bras don’t need to be washed every day, but with nursing bras, it’s different. You might leak milk (which can smell and even cause thrush if not washed), and the lycra that makes your bra stretchy will loosen over time and provide less support—washing and drying the fabric will keep your breasts and nipples healthy while also reshaping the fabric to provide the most support,” Dinardo says. If you want to spread out your wash days, we recommend having three to five bras on hand.

If you are currently breastfeeding or have plans to, a nursing bra will make it easier to feed your baby. Whether it has a clasp that unclips for quick access or stretchy fabric that is pulled up, down, or to the side, nursing bras are specifically designed to make getting your baby to their food source easier.

And as your breast size fluctuates throughout your journey, nursing bras are made to be comfortable at every stage. Plus, if you plan on pumping at any point, many nursing bras double as pumping bras so you can go hands-free while you build your stash. So the short answer is—yes, a nursing bra is very useful and they are highly recommended. But if you’re not into wearing bras, once your milk supply regulates and your leaks have leveled out to the occasional dribble, you can totally forego the bra if that is more comfortable for you.

There are a ton of different nursing bras out there and if you’ve never shopped for one before, narrowing down your options can be a task. Here are a few points to think about while you shop:

  • Style: Just like your pre-baby bras, nursing bras come in a few dozen styles like bralettes, underwired bras, and soft jersey knit bras. Depending on your idea of comfort, the level of support you need, and your lifestyle, you can choose a nursing bra that is similar to the style you’d wear regularly or you can add a few different styles to your collection so that you always have a bra in your arsenal that’ll work at different stages of your breastfeeding life.
  • Easy-to-use Access: Most nursing bras have either a clasp on the strap that unclips for feeding access or a clasp-free pull-down (or pull-up or pull to the side) design. While both options are effective and relatively easy to use, you might find one easier to use than another at different times. When you’re on your third feeding in the middle of the night, fumbling with a clip-down clasp is far less convenient than a pull-down style. On the flip side, if you’re in public and need to nurse, a clasp that you can unclip and reclip without needing to totally readjust your clothing will be more useful.
  • Comfort: More than anything, especially when you’re nursing and pumping, comfort should be at the top of your checklist. “Avoid any type of bra that is too tight or uncomfortable which can lead to clogged ducts or mastitis,” Scott says. “You preferably want a fabric that can stretch during the early days of engorgement and still fit well once your milk supply has plateaued around 3-4 months of age.” If you have a larger bust, Krahl says that you should opt for a “full shape bra and a full cup, not semi coverage” to avoid creating the dreaded double boob look.

profile picture of Emma O'Regan-Reidy

In a nutshell:

Based on feedback from our team of independent product testers, two surveys of almost 650 moms from The Bump community and advice from several lactation consultants and intimate wear experts, we chose Bravado Designs Sculpt Bra as the overall best maternity bra. It stood out because of its built-in support, stretchy knit material and comfortable functionality. For those who are breastfeeding, we chose the Bravado Designs Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra as the overall best nursing bra, due to its knit-in support zones, adaptable sizing and breathable material.

Motherhood comes with a lot of physical changes from the get-go. Changes to breast tissue begin early in pregnancy—as early as one or two weeks after conception, according to the National Institutes of Health . In fact, breast tenderness and swelling in the first trimester are so common that they’re widely viewed as early signs of pregnancy . Your breasts will grow in size throughout pregnancy, thanks to an increase in hormones—and if you go on to breastfeed after baby is born, they’ll not only stay enlarged, but may get even bigger.

All this to say, you’re going to need some new bras. And not just any bra—something designed to offer all-day comfort (for your sensitive skin and tender nipples), superior support (as your breasts grow in size) and, if you plan to breastfeed, easy nursing access. Most of the best maternity bras on the market double as nursing bras, and the good news is, there’s a nursing bra out there for every situation, whether it’s for everyday wear, sleep or exercise—the cup runneth over with choices.

However, with so many options out there, how do you know which one is right for you ? To help you find the right style for your needs, we put dozens of top-rated maternity and nursing bras to the test with the help of expectant and breastfeeding moms. Below, discover our top picks for every need, including this year’s Best of The Bump award winners, as well as expert-backed advice and shopping tips.

How We Tested and Chose the Best Maternity and Nursing Bras

nursing bra

The Bump editors conducted extensive research to identify 48 leading maternity and nursing bras on the market, and of those chose a shortlist of 37 of the best products to test. From there:

  • We enlisted the help of 30 independent product testers to try out different maternity and nursing bras. They wore the bras while pregnant or breastfeeding in various situations, from middle-of-the-night feedings to wedding receptions and everything in between. Then, they rated each bra across categories like support, comfort, fit, quality, style and value for money.
  • We surveyed almost 650 new and expectant moms in The Bump community for additional insight on the pros and cons of specific bras for pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • We interviewed two lactation consultants, the founder and CEO of an intimate wear company and a stylist. These experts highlighted which styles and features to keep an eye on as you shop for nursing and maternity bras.
  • Because every family’s experience is different, we scoured forums and message boards and read user reviews to find out how these top-rated nursing bras and maternity styles performed for parents across the country.

The Best Maternity and Nursing Bras for Every Need

Overall best maternity bra.

Bravado Designs Sculpt Bra

  • Knit-in support zones
  • Soft, stretchy fabric
  • Wide size range
  • Molded cups for shaping
  • No nursing features

If you’re searching for the perfect bra to support your growing breasts during pregnancy, look no further than the Sculpt Bra from Bravado Designs. The simple, classic style may look like your average bralette or sports bra—but it’s complete with plenty of pregnancy-friendly features to help you out. This is our Best of The Bump winner for overall best maternity bra for the second year running, thanks to its all-around comfort, built-in support and seamless design. See all of this year’s Best of The Bump winners .

Given the breast growth and tenderness you’re likely to experience during pregnancy, a proper fit and superior comfort are key. The Sculpt bra is made of a nylon-blend material that’s stretchy enough to conform to your changing shape and soft enough to comfortably wear all day (and even night!). Plus, the fabric is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, meaning it’s free of harmful substances to keep you and baby safe. “I really love the material and the comfort!” said our pregnant product tester, Ivyonna. To ensure a proper fit for every body, this bra boasts wide, adjustable straps and is available in sizes small through XXL in both standard and full-cup sizes. And because this pregnancy bra is seamless and wire-free, there’s nothing to dig into your sensitive skin. “I sit at a desk all day and it doesn’t squeeze the top of my belly too tight,” Ivyonna reported.

While this bra is wire-free to avoid compressing your milk ducts, you can count on it to keep everything lifted and in place due to the special knit-in support zones around the cups. “I’m able to do all [ my usual ] activities without the girls coming out,” Ivyonna gushed. Meanwhile, the molded cups reduce compression on your breasts while providing separation and shape that maternity bralettes don’t always provide.

Keep in mind that the Sculpt bra isn’t designed for nursing, so if you intend on breastfeeding, once baby is born you’ll want to buy another bra that offers easy access. That said, Ivyonna, who was 30 weeks pregnant when testing, thoroughly enjoyed this maternity bra for her pregnancy. She awarded it 10 out of 10 across all categories, particularly praising the stylish look, great material, comfort and quality, earning it a perfect score and a Best of The Bump badge.

Bravado Designs Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra

  • Stretchy, breathable fabric
  • Easy one-handed clip-down style
  • Wide range of sizes
  • Some moms suggest sizing up

The wildly popular Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra by Bravado Designs blew our product tester Danae away when it came to comfort, fit, quality and style, making it an easy choice as the two-time Best of The Bump winner for overall best nursing bra. “I’m very impressed by the quality,” she said. It’s made with the brand’s trademark eco-adapt fabric, a soft, breathable OEKO-TEX material that perfectly stretches with your changing body. And for added lift around the cups, this wireless pick features removable foam inserts and knit-in support zones. “This bra manages to support without feeling restrictive and tight,” Danae told us. In fact, she liked how it felt so much, she awarded it a 10 out of 10 for both fit and comfort. “The bra is not tight, no spillage—it’s like I was wearing nothing,” she told us.

Members of The Bump community forum also testified to the bra’s performance across a variety of body types—including those experiencing size fluctuations: jessie55 , a member of The Bump forums, shared: “They were the only bras that fit me when I was engorged. What's great / [ about ] them is that they fit a range of sizes, which is perfect since you don't know how big you will get.” (In fact, the adjustable Body Silk nursing bra comes in small through XXL in both standard and full-cup sizes, which is designed for large cups and smaller band size.) Aloe0l , another forum member, says, “I really, really love my Bravado Body Silk bra. It has a ton of room to grow [ because ] I know I’ll swell at least another size, but it's supportive enough for these heavy things that I don't feel uncomfortable wearing it to work either."

nursing bra

Perhaps best of all, this clip-down bra features the brand’s special “B” clips, which require only one hand to lower. Danae found these “easy to undo,” awarding the bra 10 out of 10 for ease of use. The clips are tested to hold up to 25 pounds, with cups that provide the support you need but drop away completely during feeding for that vital skin-to-skin contact. It’s safe to say this option has everything we’re looking for in a top-rated nursing bra. In fact, many members of The Bump community forums said they have more than one!

Sizes: S to XXL-FC | Material: 70% recycled nylon/20% nylon/10% spandex | Type of closure: Hook and eye | Nursing features: Clip-down cups | Care instructions: Machine wash, line dry

“I’ve bought many nursing bras and they don’t stand up to the comfort I feel in this one.”

Our community says:

"I just bought a Bravado Body Silk bra and I'm in love. It's wireless, will grow with me [and] is a nursing bra, but it includes clips to convert it, and my boobs actually look ok in it. It's not cheap, but since it will transition from pregnancy to nursing, I ordered a second." – Shortcake2675 , The Bump forum member

"I ordered another. It's comfortable enough for me to sleep in too. I liked having it right away in the hospital for easy [breastfeeding], especially with doctors, nurses and visitors arriving at all hours." – tortuga47 , The Bump forum member

"It's very comfortable and easy to nurse in. It looks and makes me feel good." – Elena, mom of a 2-month-old and The Bump survey respondent

Best maternity and nursing sleep bra

Bravado Designs Ballet Bra

  • Easy pull-down nursing access
  • Free from clasps and hooks
  • Soft, cooling fabric

Whether you’re dealing with heavier-than-usual breasts that need overnight support, or you prefer to wear nursing pads to catch leaking milk, a good sleep bra can be an expectant or nursing mom’s best friend. In fact, 48 percent of new moms who responded to our survey said they wore a nursing sleep bra. If you’re like them, you’ll want to look for two things: superior comfort that won’t disturb your rest, and easy access for middle-of-the-night feedings (so you don’t have to fumble around in the dark). The Bravado Designs Ballet Bra offers all this and more, racking up the brand’s second Best of The Bump win as our best maternity and nursing sleep bra.

The Bravado Designs Ballet Bra has a simple pull-down design rather than clip-down cups, making nighttime feedings an absolute breeze. Moreover, the bra is made from cool recycled nylon with an ultra-soft lyocell modal lining, to keep you cool and comfy all night long. “I was so surprised how soft the bra felt when I tried it on! There were no parts that rubbed the wrong way or weren't comfortable,” our product tester Caitlin said, awarding it 10 out of 10 scores for comfort and fit.

At first Caitlin wasn’t sure if this pull-over maternity bralette would be supportive, since it doesn’t have wires or a hook-and-eye closure. But she was pleasantly surprised when she put it on—in fact, she rated it a 10 out of 10 for support. “Once trying [ on ] the bra, I realized it provided all the support necessary and held everything where it was supposed to be,” she said. The supportive crossover style is complete with a wide, stretchy bottom band to keep everything in place as you rest. “It’s a very high-quality bra,” Caitlin told us. “The material is thick without feeling heavy, and the stitching is very well done.”

The Auden Nursing Seamless Bra also thoroughly impressed our product tester Kara, who awarded it 10 out of 10 scores across several categories, including support and fit. While you may expect a less expensive style to stretch out over time, Kara told us that this top-rated nursing bra held up beautifully. “Unlike some other nursing bras that get looser throughout the day (or night), this one held its shape and support,” she gushed. “I loved the full coverage that it has, as I’ve struggled to find an affordable option that offers both coverage and support!” Even though this bra is wireless, it has sewn-in cups to help keep everything in place. Better yet, Kara found adjusting the fit to be simple, which is an especially important feature when experiencing size fluctuations. “With the easily adjustable straps and multiple back clasp size options it was very simple to have a nice fit. It wasn’t visible under clothes,” she said. One drawback she did note was the feel of the back clasps. “There was some itchiness in that area when worn for very long,” she reported, “but overall [ it was ] a very comfortable option.”

Another highlight of this affordable nursing bra is its easy functionality. “The clip is very simple to undo for quick access for feeding my little one,” Kara shared. “The straps stayed in place very well while nursing and it was very easy to get baby in a good position for nursing in this bra."

I love how versatile this bra [is] with the adjustable straps in the back so that you can make it racerback. It's also very comfortable and such a great price. – Brenna*, mom of a 2-month-old and The Bump survey respondent

[This] sleep/nursing bra is easy to put on, easy to clean (no removable pads!) and easy to nurse in. – Kristine, mom of a 2-month-old and The Bump survey respondent

I got a couple of Auden seamless nursing bras from Target, and I really like them! Comfy but supportive. I normally wear sports bras all day since I work from home, so I’m picky on comfort/support when it comes to regular bras. – runningyogimama , The Bump forum member

Megan also awarded this breastfeeding bra a 10 out of 10 for ease of use. “The bra itself is great for nursing. I love that there aren’t straps connecting the band to the straps that may get in the way when nursing or sleeping,” she shared. When nursing, simply undo the quick-release clasps on each strap and you’ll be good to go. Moms also rave about the adjustable rib band, which can be easily modified to meet your body’s changing needs. Megan found the band to be a bit tight for her liking, but told us that “the rest of the bra is super soft, fits great and allows for changes through it the day based on my supply.”

The smooth material is also fast-drying, sweat-wicking for added comfort and, according to Megan, of high enough quality to last for more than one breastfeeding journey. Another highlight you’ll appreciate is the racerback pocket, which offers a perfect spot to store your phone, keys or other essentials as you exercise. Megan loved this nursing and maternity bra so much that she told us, “I already purchased it in another color!”

Sizes: XS to XXL | Material: 72% polyester/28% spandex | Type of closure: Hook and eye | Nursing features: Clip-down cups | Care instructions: Machine wash cold

“I would recommend this bra to other women. Supportive and convenient nursing apparel has been one of the hardest items to find on my two postpartum journeys.”

Best nursing sports bra for high-impact activities

SHEFIT Ultimate Sports Bra High Impact

  • Outstanding support
  • Two-way stretch fabric for freedom of movement
  • Customizable shoulder straps and rib band
  • Hidden hook-and-eye closure
  • Zipper doesn’t offer coverage when breastfeeding
  • Fabric could be gentler

When taking on workouts like HIIT sessions, running or CrossFit, you need the highest level of support, with a bra made of firmer materials and more padding. Thankfully, the SHEFIT Ultimate Sports Bra definitely fits the bill, thanks to its durable material and highly adjustable fit, and earned it a Best of The Bump award for best nursing sports bra for high-impact activities.

Our product tester Mia was impressed by this nursing sports bra, awarding it a 10 out of 10 across categories like support, ease of use and quality. Right away, she told us that she was pleasantly surprised by the support level the bra provided during her workouts and jogs. “I found the bra to be very supportive and comfortable against my skin. I appreciated its snug fit, yet it also offered enough flexibility for movement,” she shared. This is a result of the bra’s two-way stretch fabric and wire-free seams, both of which work to deliver structure without being rigid. Mia wished the fabric was a bit softer, especially when her nipples were sore post-breastfeeding, but overall, she was a fan of how it held everything in place. She was also impressed by the bra's quality. “The stitching is impeccable, and the material feels durable and of high quality,” she said.

nursing bra

While you can count on this nursing bra to work hard in the gym, you can also rely on it for breastfeeding. It’s not designed expressly for that purpose, but the front zipper allows for straightforward breast access. Mia praised the design and pointed out that “the little hooks that secure it [ make ] zipping much easier,” which proved convenient when nursing her twins. However, the zip opening did leave her feeling a bit exposed when nursing.

The SHEFIT Ultimate Sports Bra is available in a wide range of sizes, from A to I cups, to ensure the perfect fit. Better yet, the style is highly customizable. The Velcro shoulder straps offer 15 inches of lift, while the rib band can be adjusted up to eight inches. “I found it easy to adjust, and I appreciated the Velcro straps on the back and shoulders,” Mia told us. “The fit remained consistent between feeds.” On the whole, Mia highly recommends this nursing bra. According to her, “it's a reliable choice if you're after durability and support, especially for active moms with larger chests.”

Sizes: XS to 6Luxe | Material: 88% nylon/12% spandex (liner); 100% polyester (shell); 86% nylon/14% spandex (PowerMesh) | Type of closure: Hook and eye | Nursing features: Zipper front | Care instructions: Hand wash, lay flat to dry

“In comparison to other nursing bras I've tried, it felt more supportive. It was particularly great during my morning jog, as it kept everything secure and in place.”

Best sexy maternity and nursing bra

Cake Maternity Chantilly Maternity & Nursing Bralette

  • Pretty lace detailing
  • Doesn’t look like a nursing bra
  • Stylish and comfortable, according to our product tester
  • Moms recommend sizing up
  • No matching panties

Whether you’re in the midst of pregnancy or the early days of motherhood, you may be craving a pick-me-up. After all the changes your body has gone through, it’s natural to feel the opposite of sexy, to say the least. Thankfully, not all maternity and nursing bras are just about getting the job done with none of the fun or glamor that intimate wear can offer. Case in point: This flattering style from Cake Maternity, our Best of The Bump winner for best sexy maternity and nursing bra. Unlike most breastfeeding bras, no detail was spared when designing this pretty all-lace style. It comes in chic colors like blush, pale blue and black and looks more like timeless lingerie than a purely practical garment.

nursing bra

Our product tester Serena loved how she looked in this option, telling us that it’s “such a sexy look for a nursing bra!” The French-inspired pattern is sheer and incredibly lightweight for that added touch of sexiness. Meanwhile, a wide underband provides crucial support even when your breasts are full and heavier than usual. To top it all off, you can also count on this bra to deliver straightforward breastfeeding access, thanks to its clip-down cups. Serena had nothing but praise for this style’s ease of use as a nursing bra. In her words, it’s “very easy to use [ with ] snaps and clasps!”

It should come as no surprise that Serena gave this bra a 10 out of 10 for style, but you’ll be impressed that it earned equally high marks for comfort and even support. “This bra has great support and isn’t too constricting!” gushed Serena. “I love how comfortable the fabric is.” While this bra is sheer, it has a mesh microfiber lining for added comfort and to reduce the possibility of showing through clothing. You’ll also appreciate that there aren’t any uncomfortable wires—another feature that enhances its all-day wearability. And if you need an extra lift, a J-hook is included to convert it into a racerback-style. Available in cup sizes B through G, this versatile bra offers flattering support for women of all sizes. “I would recommend this bra for mamas who might want a cute nursing bra!” concluded Serena.

Sizes: Petite S to Busty XL | Material: 81% nylon/16% spandex/3% viscose | Type of closure: Hook and eye | Nursing features: Clip-down cups | Care instructions: Hand wash

“This is one of the best nursing bras I’ve used and has a great style!”

When to Start Wearing a Maternity Bra

Wondering when to buy a maternity bra? Amanda Hunt, founder and CEO of Davin & Adley , a maternity bra brand, suggests starting to look for the right pregnancy bra pretty early on. “You may be able to get by for the first 12 weeks without a new bra, but usually around 13 to 14 weeks, you will need to start looking for a maternity bra with more support,” she says.

We also surveyed expectant moms from The Bump community on when they actually bought their first maternity bra. And our respondents answered as follows:

First trimester: 40 percent

Second trimester: 51 percent

Third trimester: 9 percent

Keep in mind that the first maternity bra you buy almost certainly won’t be the last; just because you find a maternity bra that fits now doesn’t mean that it’ll be your perfect size after baby arrives. “It’s not unusual to change bra sizes within the first few weeks of breastfeeding,” says New York City stylist Samantha Brown .

When to Buy a Nursing Bra

While there’s some overlap in function between maternity bras and nursing bras (and most cover both stages), a nursing bra is expressly designed so the wearer can easily breastfeed or pump without completely removing their bra. It uses one of several design features to allow access to the nipple. If you’re planning to breastfeed and your maternity bras don’t have this kind of functionality, you’re going to need some nursing bras as well.

Since breast size can change a lot post-birth, Leigh Anne O’Connor , IBCLC, a certified lactation consultant, suggests that “it’s good to purchase one or two nursing bras in the third trimester” to start off with. Then, you can pick up two to four more about a week or so after baby is born. This time period will “give the breasts a chance to make milk and [determine] what size the nursing parent will ‘land’ on,” explains O’Connor.

That being said, when you buy a nursing bra largely comes down to personal preference. According to our survey, 34 percent of expectant and new moms told us they purchased bras for breastfeeding during the second trimester of their pregnancy. On the other hand, 25 percent bought one early in their third trimester and 20 percent did so late in their third trimester, while 7 percent of moms said they waited until they gave birth (up to three months after) to buy a nursing bra.

“Luckily, most nursing bras are designed to fit a wider range of sizes compared to a typical bra,” says O’Connor. So if you experience a significant change in size, your breastfeeding bra can most likely be adjusted to meet your changing needs.

What to Look for in Maternity and Nursing Bras

The same features you look for when shopping for a regular bra are especially crucial when you’re looking for a bra while pregnant or breastfeeding. Your girls are working hard for you and baby, so accommodate them well! You’ll want to watch out for the following considerations, according to Hunt:

A good maternity bra should fit comfortably. Pull-on bralettes, designed to stretch over your belly and not feel restrictive, are great options when expecting. Pregnancy can cause skin sensitivity issues, so it’s important to find a maternity bra that’s soft on your skin. Hunt suggests that pregnant women avoid scratchy trims and fabrics that can itch or irritate.

It didn’t come as a surprise that 81 percent of our survey respondents also listed comfort as the number-one feature they looked for in a nursing bra. Stephanie Nguyen, RN, IBCLC, a certified lactation consultant and founder of Modern Milk , agrees that this should be at the top of your nursing bra must-have list, especially during the first four to six weeks after having a baby. She recommends stretchy nursing bras to accommodate the breast changes moms experience during this time. “Look for nursing bras in soft fabrics,” Nguyen says. You’ll also want to pick a bra with thick back closures with four or more hooks and wide, cushioned straps, plus a band that doesn’t ride up in the back.

Support is a key element to consider when choosing a maternity or nursing bra—and both the experts and 37 percent of our survey respondents agree. “This is one of the most important features of a maternity bra,” says Hunt. “The weight of your breast tissue can get incredibly uncomfortable and cause pain in your back and shoulders. Having a well-fitted bra with wider straps and a supportive band will raise your chest off your belly and help improve your posture.”

In the fourth trimester, breasts filled with milk are fuller (and heavier), so you’ll want more support than you had before baby. A supportive nursing bra may also help prevent sagging breasts after baby graduates from breastfeeding. “The band under the bust should be snug,” says Brown, but make sure the straps don’t cut into your shoulders. “An ill-fitting bra can impact a woman’s posture and lead to strain and tension headaches,” she explains.

Wireless vs. wire-free

You’ll also want to consider whether you want a maternity bra with or without an underwire. “The risk with underwire bras is that they can put extra pressure on the mammary tissue,” explains O’Connor. She adds that it is possible to develop clogged milk ducts during pregnancy, which can lead to mastitis . Ouch. A wire-free bra can offer some safety while still providing structure.

That said, it doesn’t mean you can’t wear an underwire bra, especially if you’re eager for the added support. Ultimately, the choice is yours. In fact, 16 percent of moms in our survey told us they did wear a maternity bra with an underwire. If you do choose to use one, O’Connor cautions that “an underwire bra should be fitted so as to not put pressure on the breasts.” The bra shouldn’t be tight, and the wire should be flexible. This is particularly important in the early days of breastfeeding, when an ill-fitting underwire can put pressure on breast tissue and “cause clogged milk ducts,” says O’Connor. This can lead to not just mastitis, but also reduced milk supply and, in extreme cases, an abscess. As long as the wire is flexible enough to move with your body and doesn’t dig into or compress the breast, underwire nursing bras can be a fine choice.

So how can you tell if you’ve found the best nursing bra for you? Rest assured, there’s no right or wrong here. As Nguyen says, “If it fits, if it’s comfortable, if it’s easy to nurse in and you like the style,” you’ve found your nursing bra.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a maternity bra.

In short, yes. As estrogen and progesterone levels rise during pregnancy and blood flow to the breasts starts to increase, you’ll need a bra designed to support your growing chest. And no, buying your current bra in a bigger size won’t do the trick—the best bras for pregnancy are specifically designed to provide flexibility and support for growing bodies. Moreover, most maternity bras are complete with nursing features (like clip-down straps or pull-down cups). As a result, you can get the most bang for your buck by having a bra that supports your changing body throughout pregnancy and your breastfeeding journey.

It’s also important to consider your lifestyle when selecting a maternity bra, and remember that you might need more than one type. Active moms may require a high-impact maternity sports bra, while others may only need one or two everyday styles. In our survey of The Bump community, 86 percent of respondents invested in an everyday maternity bra, while 30 percent reported wearing a maternity sports bra during pregnancy and 26 percent said that they wore a bra specifically designed for sleep.

How many nursing bras do I need?

Brown suggests picking up at least two nursing bras for daily wear, so you’ll always have one on hand when the other is in the wash. After all, leaking is common, and even with the use of breast pads , your nursing bra is likely to get leaked on or spit up on, so it’s always a good idea to have a spare one on hand.

Do I need a separate pumping bra?

The purpose of a pumping bra is to provide a hands-free way to express milk . Rather than exposing the full breast for feeding, a pumping bra has a smaller opening over the nipple, where a breast pump flange can be inserted and held securely during pumping.

Whether you need a separate pumping bra is, as always, up to you; 35 percent of our survey respondents told us they looked for breast pump compatibility in their nursing bras. Some women appreciate the stability a dedicated pumping bra provides, while others enjoy the convenience of a combination nursing/pumping bra. Some mothers circumvent the need for a pumping bra entirely by using a wearable breast pump that fits directly into their bra cup, keeping their hands free during pumping.

If you're planning to breastfeed your little one, you'll want to add a comfortable and supportive nursing bra to the seemingly never-ending list of must-haves on your baby registry .

Sure, you can technically reach for your favorite bralette and call it a day, but the right bra not only better supports changing breasts but can even help protect them. "The bra itself should be supportive but not restrictive," says Chrisie Rosenthal, an IBCLC with The Lactation Network , an organization that connects families with insurance-covered breastfeeding support. "Underwire bras are not recommended, because they can lead to plugged ducts and/or mastitis."

You'll also want to choose a soft fabric that will stretch with you, as breast size can change throughout the day, says Rosenthal. In general, the best nursing bras are constructed of a soft, stretchy material—like breathable cotton. Adjustable straps and lightly molded cups can also help add a little lift, support, and shape without irritating. You may also want to look for bras with added rows of hook-and-eye closures for a more flexible fit, as well as removable padding to help catch any leaks. Of course, a quality nursing bra also offers easy access when it's time to feed, whether that's via clips on the straps or pull-over cups. And, if you're worried about leaks, opt for gray, black, and skin-toned colored bras—colors can get dirty quickly and more readily show milk stains, says Shani James , a doula and certified lactation counselor.

Whether you're looking for a bralette, a sleep bra, or a plunge style, real moms say these are the most comfortable and supportive nursing bras from popular brands like Kindred Bravely , ThirdLove , and Victoria's Secret .

For new moms who prefer a more traditional silhouette to the more standard bralettes nursing bras usually come in, this everyday bra has molded cups that offer plenty of support for cup sizes A all the way through H. It also has a tag-free design and a foam-padded hook-and-eye closure with extended hooks for maximum comfort.

There's a reason you see this bra all over your social media feeds. The relatively budget-friendly pick is made of a super soft and highly breathable cotton that'll keep you feeling good all day long—it's so comfortable, you could even sleep in it. Still, the bra features lightly lined cups to offer a little bit of shape, plus has clip-down straps for easy access come feeding time.

Moms love this bra because it looks just like any other T-shirt bra but doesn't have any potentially irritating underwire. What it does have: a wide, supportive band that lends a little lift, sew-in foam cups for shaping and contouring, and and a seamless design that's all but invisible under T-shirts.

The Everything Bra

The Everything Bra

The brand designed this stretchy, comfortable nursing bra in tandem with a lactation expert to ensure the right fit from the first trimester all the way through those postpartum days. Moms with large breasts (even H cups!) call this one of the favorite bras of all time.

Knix BlissFit Leakproof Nursing Bra

BlissFit Leakproof Nursing Bra

If you don't want to wear breast pads all day long, this bra from Knix is a fantastic solution. Like the brand's famed underwear, the stretchy bralette is specially designed to keep leaks at bay. It features removable absorbent pads that soak up any drips of milk in between feeds.

Hatch The Dream Feed Nursing and Sleep Bra

The Dream Feed Nursing and Sleep Bra

Hatch manufactures some of the most high-quality, comfortable maternity and postpartum gear around, and this "buttery soft" bra is no exception. Though it's entirely wire-free, the cotton-and-spandex pick is extra thick to add a little bit of support without sacrificing comfort. Moms like that there aren't any clips to fumble with—simply pull the bra to the side to feed.

soma Wireless Nursing Bra

It may not be the most attractive bra out there, but moms in the know say it's a workhorse they came to rely on for pumping sessions. The bra zips on and off and features slits in the cups that allow you to use your breast pump entirely hands-free—ideal for getting some extra work done (or sneaking in lunch) at the same time.

Kindred Bravely Simply Sublime Seamless Nursing Bra

Simply Sublime Seamless Nursing Bra

Kindred Bravely's popular nursing bra features a wireless, seamless design and an incredibly soft fabric that provides a touch of support without aggravating already sore breasts. Like other great nursing bras, it also boasts one-handed clip-down cups that provide quick access for both nursing and skin-to-skin.

Storq Everyday Bra

Nobody likes to spend money on a bra they'll wear only for a short period of time—and that's exactly why so many moms choose this highly versatile pick. The aptly named Everyday Bra is made of a silky soft modal spandex jersey that offers plenty of stretch, allowing users to wear it from the first trimester all the way into the fourth—and beyond. There are no clips to contend with. Simply pull the bra to the side for easy nursing.

The Best Nursing Bras Tested To Make Every Feeding A Bit Easier

Every woman’s experience with breastfeeding is unique. Even if you’ve done it before, a new baby and your breasts could behave completely differently the next time around. That’s why the best nursing bras have one thing in common: flexibility, in every sense of the word.

I tested more than two dozen nursing bras myself over the last year as a first-time mother, first while nursing, and later while exclusively pumping. More recently, I organized a panel of five other nursing moms to test out the favorites for two weeks for this story. After reviewing all feedback and data, I determined that Bodily’s The Do Anything Bra is easily the best nursing bra overall, thanks to its streamlined, convenient and feminine design; highly adjustable, secure band and straps; and butter-soft fabric. The Auden Women’s Nursing Seamless Bra is my pick for best value nursing bra, because it met all the criteria, and the panelists raved about its performance even though it costs half as much as the competition.

The best nursing bras feel soft on the skin but are supportive too.

We found additional nursing bras we liked during the course of testing, too. Some work better for some moms over others. For example, the Cosabella Never Say Never Maternity Mommie Nursing Bralette fits those with larger breasts better and the Cake Maternity Cotton Candy Maternity And Nursing Bra is ideal to wear during the hazy newborn weeks when your milk is still coming in and regulating.

What I found overall is that the best bras for nursing and pumping feel soft, supportive and breathable, and yet they won’t stretch out and sag by the end of the day. The band and straps are simple to adjust and feel secure, and the nursing clips and openings for pumping are easy to use. The design gives you good coverage without underwire or constricting your breasts’ sensitive tissue or feeling depressingly utilitarian. Nursing bras can be pretty and, believe it or not, mood-lifting. (After reading this article, you may want to shop the best nursing clothes and the best breast pumps . The best nursing pillows can provide additional support, too.)

The following is a list of all the best nursing bra winners from my recent testing:

  • Best Nursing Bra Overall : The Do Anything Bra
  • Best Value Nursing Bra: Auden Women's Nursing Seamless Bra
  • Best Nursing Bra For Pumping: Kindred Bravely Sublime Hands-Free Pumping And Nursing Bra
  • Best Nursing Bra For Large Breasts: Never Say Never Maternity Mommie Nursing Bralette
  • Best Nursing Bra For Newborn Months: Cake Maternity Cotton Candy Maternity And Nursing Bra

Best Nursing Bra Overall

Comfortable, lightweight support for nursing or pumping, the do anything bra.

Style: Clip-down nursing; covered opening in cup for pumping | Size range: Small (32A) to 3X (46DDD/F) | Material: 76% polyamide (a.k.a. nylon), 24% elastane | Wireless: Yes | Padded: No | Care: Machine-wash cold/delicate, line dry

Best for:

  • Nursing and pumping or exclusively pumping (not wireless or wearable)
  • Wearing under loose clothing or layers
  • Any bust size, thanks to sturdy straps and a racerback option

Skip if:

  • You prefer a smooth, lined cup
  • Line drying isn’t feasible
  • You need a small band and large cup size

This Bodily Do Anything bra was my personal favorite, and our testers of every size loved it, too, selecting it as the one they’d recommend to a friend regardless of price. It’s unique for its lightweight design that lets you nurse and pump. Most other pumping bras have multiple layers of fabric to hold the pump flanges in place, which can make them feel hot, thick and uncomfortable. Bodily’s Do Anything Bra holds flanges in place securely with a single layer.

The Best, Most Comfortable Fabric And Design

That fabric is perhaps the best thing about this Bodily bra . It’s unlike that of any other I tried: silky, smooth and, as one tester said, “like butter.” Another called it “very silky and soft” and her “favorite material of all of them.” The texture and pastel colors make it feel feminine and pretty but not overly so.

The strap material is noteworthy, too; it’s a thick, soft material that’s textured like grosgrain ribbon to really hold the metal adjuster sliders, which are located conveniently on the front of the straps, in place. When you need to tighten them to pump, it’s really easy to do. You can also unhook the straps in the back to configure them racerback-style for extra support. The band is silky and stretchy, and it stays put. The cushioned back closure has five rows of hooks, so you can adjust it as your breast size changes.

Our testers agreed the sturdy nursing clips unfasten easily with one hand. They reveal a large interior sling made of the same silky material that cups the entire side of your breast.

Testers preferred the feel of Bodily's silk-like fabric compared to other nursing bras. ... [+]

A Few Downsides

One thing you should know about this bra—and any bra on the market that’s designed to support pumping, whether or not the manufacturer says so—is that you may not be able to wear it 24/7 right when you come home from the hospital. The company recommends wearing the Do Anything Bra loosely to start, especially when you’re not pumping; if you find that you’re prone to engorgement or clogs, it’s recommended not to wear it all day until you’ve been breastfeeding for at least 6 months.

The other shortcoming our testers pointed out is that the pleated design that camouflages the pockets for the pump flanges can make the bra’s texture visible through your clothing. I thought the design looked pretty and didn’t mind the texture; I preferred having a one-layer bra to a smoother-looking multilayer bra, such as the Kindred Bravely Sublime Hands-Free Pumping and Nursing Bra (for a padded option) or the Hatch Essential Nursing and Pumping Bra (for a non-padded option). Another tester loved how the Bodily bra looked “sexy and sleek” and called it “definitely the prettiest pumping bra.”

If you pump using a wearable device, you may want more stretch and compression. The times I tried using a Willow or Elvie breast pump with this bra, it felt a little bit loose even after I adjusted it to fit tightly.

Some of our testers wished this bra had a little padding for extra modesty and support, too, the way the top bra picks from Auden , Cosabella and Kindred Bravely do. One option is to wear it with Bodily’s nonslip breast pads , which our testers loved.

Best Value Nursing Bra

An affordable pick for any stage of nursing.

Target Auden

Auden Women's Nursing Seamless Bra

Style: Clip-down nursing bra | Size range: XS (32B/34A) to XL (38DD/40D) | Material: Shell: 92% nylon, 8% spandex; body lining: 93% nylon, 7% spandex; cup side lining: 92% nylon, 8% spandex; cup lining: 100% polyester | Wireless: Yes | Padded: Yes (fixed) | Care: Hand-wash cold, line dry

  • Exclusively nursing
  • A seamless, smooth appearance
  • Moderate support
  • You prefer removable padding or no padding
  • The polyester cup lining feels irritating to your breasts
  • You need a small band and large cup size

All the moms who raved about this $17 Target bra to me were right—it’s a winner. It may not feel as luxuriously soft or special as the Bodily bra, but it’s shockingly well designed for the price tag and comes in a range of soft colors. If you like padding, you might even prefer this bra. Its fabric is “smooth and breathable,” said one tester. Another said she “loved that it was seamless, and you can easily wear it with a T-shirt.”

An Ideal T-Shirt Bra

The band is flexible and has a padded closure with six rows of hooks for adjustability. The straps are thick and sturdy, with adjuster sliders on the front and nursing clips that are easy to undo with one hand. The lactation consultant tester pointed out that you can also use the straps to hold pump flanges in—a hack that turns it into a multipurpose pumping bra. The sling inside the cup is a medium size that’s similar to the Bodily bra, just not as silky.

One of the testers who exclusively nurses absolutely raved about the Auden bra. “I love this bra and can’t believe it’s from Target (and I love Target),” she wrote. “It’s one of the best nursing bras out there, and far more accessible than most. Padding is incredible, and it’s sewn in, which is incredible that it doesn’t move around after a feeding or in the wash.” She also loved how it didn’t stretch or sag no matter what. “Easily adjustable in all the senses, does not stretch out throughout the day,” she continued. “Just as snug after each feeding, and when I take it off at the end of the night, it’s as it was when I first put it on in the morning.”

The only downsides are that the polyester cup padding could be uncomfortable to some parents who have sensitive skin or nipples. Some of the testers found it to be a little rigid and unwieldy to fold down. Testers didn’t find cleaning it difficult thanks to its nylon and spandex blend material. This bra air-dried quickly. I do want to point out that the care label on the bra advises cold hand-washing and line drying while online directions say that machine washing is OK.

Best Nursing Bra For Pumping

Ideal support for power pumpers.

Kindred Bravely

Kindred Bravely Sublime Hands-Free Pumping And Nursing Bra

Style: Clip-down nursing; clip-down double layer for pumping | Size range: Regular: Small to XXXL (30B to 44D); Busty: Small to 3X (30E to 48H); Super Busty: Small to XXL/1X (32I to 44K) | Material: Outer: 94% nylon, 6% spandex; inner: 84% nylon, 16% spandex | Wireless: Yes | Padded: Yes (removable) | Care: Hand-wash, line dry

  • Combo feeding or exclusively pumping
  • Substantial support and full coverage
  • A broad range of sizes, including small band and large cup sizes

Skip If:

  • You nurse more than you pump (it feels unnecessarily bulky for nursing)
  • You want a lightweight bra
  • You dislike removable cup padding

Kimmay Caldwell, an undergarment educator and bra coach at Hurray Kimmay , and many of the pumping moms I queried, recommended Kindred Bravely for moms who combo feed (a.k.a. pump and breastfeed) or exclusively pump, because it’s so supportive that it makes pumping truly hands-free for parents of a wide range of body and bust sizes.

An Extra Supportive, Adjustable Fit

Why is this Kindred Bravely bra so great for pumping? It has a unique double-clip design that makes it extra supportive. You unclip one layer to pump with traditional flanges: The smooth front layer folds down to reveal a stretchy inner layer, with an opening that holds the flange firmly in place. You can also simply loosen the straps to slip a wearable pump inside and onto your breast. I found that the two layers of stretchy cup material held a wearable pump in place well; the straps, which are thick and textured with a pretty floral pattern for extra grip, give a helpful assist. The pumping testers praised its versatility and adjustability. A lactation consultant tester said it’s “very adjustable for a perfect size.”

The company’s Busty and Super Busty fits accommodate people who may have trouble finding a cup and band combination that works for them, plus this one comes with a band extender that gives you up to eight rows of hooks for a truly flexible fit. The sling is narrower than that of the best overall and best value picks, but because the band is wider, all of the testers felt quite supported. The padded cups give you a smooth, separated (non-uniboob) look while being gentle on your breast tissue.

Not The Most Breathable Pick

My main gripe about this bra is that I initially tested it in the summer and found it to be too hot. Although the fabric is designed to be moisture wicking, two layers of it felt sweltering. Maybe it was the weather; maybe it was my hormones. Another combo feeding tester agreed with me. She found the material to be “nice and stretchy but not breathable.”

If you mostly nurse, you may not want to have to undo two clips to give your baby access. The double-layer design is unnecessarily bulky for parents who mostly nurse, in the testers’ opinion.

It also may be too bulky and constrictive for you if you have very sensitive breasts, like I do. See my notes below on the Larken X bra if you need a lightweight hands-free pumping bra with less support and don’t mind less adjustability.

Best Nursing Bra For Large Breasts

Extended sizing in an extra pretty package, never say never maternity mommie nursing bralette.

Style: Clip-down nursing bra | Size range: Regular: S to XL (32A to 38D); Extended: 1X to 3X (36DD to 40DD); Curvy: Petite to XL (28DD-F to 40G-H) | Material: Lace: 93% polyamide (a.k.a. nylon), 7% elastane; lining: 95% cotton, 5% elastane; cup: 51% cotton, 44% polyester, 5% elastane | Wireless: Yes | Padded: Yes (fixed) | Care: Hand-wash, line dry

  • Exclusively nursing parents or established breastfeeders
  • A lacy but deceptively comfortable option
  • Large cup sizes, including small band and large cup sizes
  • You’re looking for a pumping bra
  • You need maximum adjustability

You may think “bralettes” when you think of Cosabella, which makes sense since the brand specializes in making lacy ones for all sizes. Caldwell told me about the company’s maternity and nursing line: “Cute bralettes,” she said. “The Curvy and Ultra Curvy lines are great.” She could not be more right. This lacy bra surprised me with the testers’ enthusiasm for it. It’s much more hardworking than it looks, and it’s especially great for women who have large breasts, thanks to the extended sizing lines that Caldwell mentioned. And it’s so pretty you may want to continue wearing it after you’re done nursing.

Deceptively Soft And Lightweight

The material of the Never Say Never Maternity Mommie Nursing Bralette is deceptively comfy thanks to the cotton-blend lining of the sewn-in cups and slings. That makes it feel softer and more breathable than bras with cheaper linings made of synthetic materials. One of the testers wrote: “This bra was surprisingly comfortable, so much so that I even slept in it.”

I chose this bra as the best nursing bra for large breasts, because of how much everyone loved its unique design and its expanded sizing. Cosabella makes this bra in its Extended line, for women who need larger band and cup sizes, and its Curvy line, for women who need a small band and large cup size. Unlike many other bras that are great for large breasts (like the Kindred Bravely pick), it’s lightweight and does not feel bulky. The sweetheart neckline gives you ample coverage, and the thick straps feel sturdy.

“It offers good support, especially for a sexier bra,” wrote one of the testers. “I feel special wearing it, almost like a regular sexy bra,” wrote another who wanted a bit more neckline coverage but loved the overall look.

I do wish it had adjuster sliders on the front rather than the back, to make tightening and loosening the cups easier. The pull-on style isn’t ideal for everyone either, since it’s not adjustable and may be especially inconvenient for new parents healing from a C-section.

Best Nursing Bra For Newborn Months

Wear this bra straight into the fourth trimester and beyond, cake maternity cotton candy maternity and nursing bra.

Style: Clip-down nursing bra | Size range: Small to XL (32B to 42DDD/F or 40G); the company makes a similar style for cup sizes G to K in XS to 4XL | Material: 90% nylon, 10% elastane | Wireless: Yes | Padded: No | Care: Machine wash cold, line dry or tumble dry

  • Nursing at any stage, including the first days and weeks
  • Gentle, lightweight and breathable support
  • Racerback design for extra support
  • You need a pumping bra
  • You dislike pull-on bras or racerback designs
  • You want a padded cup (The brand sells a similar bra with removable pads)

Caldwell and lactation consultant Gina Signorelli both recommended this Australian nursing bra brand. The Cotton Candy bra is one of its most popular bras, designed to be soft and flexible enough for immediate postpartum use.

An exclusively nursing panelist with a 4-month-old praised this Cake Maternity bra as “hands down the best.” She continued: “I love this bra! It is so incredibly comfortable, so secure, so soft. I didn’t know a nursing bra like this existed.” She loved how easy it was to adjust and how supportive it was: “It could honestly double as a sports bra,” she said. Another said she loved “the fit and support—it would be great for workouts.”

Extra Comfortable, Soft And Secure

The fabric is super soft, smooth and breathable, with knitted panels that hold and separate your breasts. You avoid the dreaded uniboob, yet it feels so lightweight that one of the testers “forgot she was wearing a bra.”

The band is gentle and adjustable, with three hook-and-eye closure rows (although not as adjustable as some of the other nursing bras here); the straps are extra sturdy, thanks to the racerback design. The testers agreed the nursing clips were easy to undo with one hand.

Panelists also reported that this bra washed nicely and came out looking brand-new. There’s no padding to come out (though the material is thick enough to be smoothing) or get wadded up in the process, either. That’s ultimately what made me prefer this bra to the similar Bravado Designs style, described below. The ease of that compared with hand-washing and line drying makes it especially nice for the early days when you’re getting the hang of nursing.

The only thing I’d change about this bra is the slider adjusters. I wish they were in the front instead of the back so that it would be easier to adjust the fit while you’re wearing it.

The Best Travel Cribs, After Testing 11 Top Models

The 12 best mattresses of 2024, based on rigorous testing, other nursing bras i tested.

The panel testers tried nine nursing bras in total. These were the top contenders after my research and previous testing experience in the category, including interviews. For example, I eliminated all wire bras from the contenders’ list after being warned off of them by every expert I interviewed. I also eliminated other bras that I had already found uncomfortable or generally useless during the course of personal feeding and testing. The five nursing bras above won out from among the dozens I’ve tried on. These four below weren’t as crowd-pleasing for the panel, but they may be worth looking at to see if they align with your particular nursing needs. Here’s why:

Hatch The Everyday Nursing Bra : The majority of testers thought this demi-style bra did not offer sufficient coverage or support, particularly for fuller busts. I’m a smaller size and personally loved it for its smooth, soft Pima cotton, delicate lace trim, sweet mother-of-pearl heart charm and elevated gold-tone clasps. If I have another child and nurse, I’ll be happy to pull this bra back out. I even wish Hatch made a non-maternity version.

The Larken X Bra : Testers wanted more support, structure and adjustability than this bra offers. “I felt ‘fast and loose,’” said one. However, two of us agreed it makes pumping very easy. If you’re struggling with clogs and mastitis, like me, it could be a great fit. In the end, it was the only bra that didn’t enrage my sensitive breasts.

Motherhood Seamless Maternity And Nursing Bra : This bra met all of the top criteria for a nursing bra, which is why I tested it. But the testers thought it stretched out during the day and was more difficult to clip and unclip than other contenders. It costs more than the best value pick yet did not score as high.

Bravado Designs Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra : Caldwell recommended this brand, and testers found it to be a functional, comfortable, breathable basic option. None liked how the cup padding came out in the wash, although it may be a good option for you if you don’t like fixed padding.

How I Tested The Best Nursing Bras

Finding the best nursing bra became an obsession for me in my fourth trimester. I personally tried more than 20. I read practically every review on the internet, and I ordered and returned tons of nursing and pumping bras, making countless trips to UPS in between feedings. I also had several brands generously send me samples to try.

When I started working on this guide, I knew I couldn’t choose the best nursing bra based solely on my personal experience, so I recruited a panel of five other new moms from a Facebook group for moms of babies born in 2022 in my New Jersey suburb to try the contenders. Some exclusively nursed, some exclusively pumped and some did a combination. One is a neonatal and pediatric dietitian and lactation consultant. (Mine! Love her.) Our babies ranged in age from 6 weeks to 9 months, and several had a second or third older child as well. Our sizes spanned from XS to XXL, with three of us in the tricky-to-fit small band/large cup category. Take it from me: If you’ve never been in this category before, you just might find yourself in it while you’re nursing.

We tested the nine best nursing bra finalists the same way: We wore each one for an amount of time that was comfortable, since this differs for every person. While wearing it, we gave it a score from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent) for each of the following criteria:

Comfort: Does the fabric feel nice? Is it breathable and moisture wicking? Is the padding good or annoying?

Fit: Is it flexible and easy to adjust?

Design: Is it supportive enough (in spite of not having underwire)? Do the nursing clips come undone easily with one hand? Are the straps easy to loosen and tighten with one hand? Does the band stay put and not ride up, and how adjustable is it? Does it give you the amount of coverage you want in the cups, neckline and over the nipples? Do you like how it looks?

Finally, we laundered each according to its care label to be sure the process wasn’t too annoying or labor-intensive and to see how the fabric held up.

The best nursing bras were the softest and gentlest to wear while offering the right amount of ... [+] support for each stage of breastfeeding.

How To Pick The Best Nursing Bra

No new mom has time to buy and return a dozen nursing bras. (Trust me, I did it, and even Amazon returns took more time and energy than I had to deal with them.) At this point, I know more about nursing bras than any one person who doesn’t make nursing bras for a living should. Read on: I’m sharing everything I’ve learned with you. To pick a great nursing bra, first consider your lifestyle, bust size and budget. That will help you narrow the field and shop wisely. Once you start shopping, check out the bras’ material composition, design and washing instructions.

Your Lifestyle

People who decide to breastfeed are nursing all the time in the beginning—like, every 2 hours (sometimes more). You might not even want to wear a bra. (More on that in a minute.) Going braless might be more comfortable and convenient, or you might prefer a camisole with or without a shelf bra and nursing clips. If you do want to wear a bra, it should be soft and flexible, and you should be able to adjust it to fit comfortably knowing that your breast size may fluctuate a lot.

“The bra should not be very tight, and no underwires also, at the beginning especially,” says Maya Bolman , a postpartum nurse and international board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) who worked in the postpartum and lactation departments at Cleveland Clinic’s Hillcrest Hospital for 26 years and is now at Breastfeeding Medicine of Northeast Ohio. “The breast is a gland. It’s fat tissue with the ductal system, the lymphatic system, blood vessels. Everything in the first days after you experience engorgement is basically swelling. I call it a traffic jam inside the breast. Everything’s stuck; nothing is going in the right direction. If you put on something very restrictive, you’re going to make it worse.”

After 3 months or so, you, your babe and your boobs may be getting into the swing of things. That’s when a more supportive bra may be helpful. If you’re heading back to work at this point, you may want a bra for pumping. The kind of bra you want if you work at home may be different from what you want if you work in an office in terms of coverage and modesty, too.

Your Bust Size

You really can’t know what size your nursing boobs will be until they’re there. You could have been an A or B cup all your life and suddenly feel like Dolly Parton. If you want to buy a nursing bra in advance to be prepared, you can make an educated guess. When you’re 30 weeks to 8 months pregnant, take your measurement as per usual, then add one cup size and one band size, says maternal health expert and lactation counselor Jada Shapiro , founder of Boober , an online platform where parents can find lactation consultants and doulas. “Of course,” she adds, “when the milk comes in, some people will grow another cup size or two, which is why stretchy material is so important for the early days of nursing. After the milk fully comes in, it begins to regulate over the next few weeks and months. You may see your breast size go down a bit.”

Her advice? “Buy a few bras ahead of time that are comfortable and stretchy, and then when your baby is a couple months old, you can do a new round of shopping once you know more about what your body looks and feels like and what your needs are.”

If you have a smaller bust, you can opt for demi-style cups, lighter materials and thin, dainty straps without worrying about feeling sufficiently supported.

If you have a larger bust, you may want to look for styles with fuller-coverage cups, thicker straps and racerback straps. Some styles also have a hook in the back to let you convert to a racerback style for more support when you need it. Cake Maternity founder Tracey Montford recommends looking for more inner slings for added support, a higher center-front design for more coverage, a wider back band and three to four rows of hooks and eyes; you may also want a soft, flexible wired cup to give you shape, support and separation.

If you have a smaller band size and larger cup size, know that some companies such as Cosabella and Kindred Bravely offer special sizing for you.

Finally, expect that you likely will need different sizes of nursing bras while you’re breastfeeding. “Your bust size can change with 5 pounds of weight change,” says Kristyn Polin, bra fitter and customer service supervisor at Bare Necessities . “As you breastfeed, you may lose weight.” She recommends getting measured or at least measuring yourself once a month, and advises: “Don’t buy 10 bras in one size, because it’ll change.”

Your Budget

I found great quality nursing bras in the $15 to $85 range, so there should be one to fit your budget. Another sustainable and even more affordable option is to join a Facebook group for moms in your area. Moms often pass along gear they’ve outgrown for free or discounted, including nursing bras, breast pumps and more.

Nursing Bra Materials

You want fabric that’ll help you feel comfortable when you’re anything but. “The best materials are soft, lightweight, stretchy, moisture wicking and easy to use with one hand,” says Shapiro.

Breathable yet moisture wicking is a tricky needle to thread. Some moisture-wicking materials can feel like bad workout leggings: hot and stuffy. On the other hand, the most breathable organic cotton can feel rigid, heavy and saggy. You want something in between. Pima cotton is a good choice; the top two nursing bras in this guide are made of a blend of nylon and elastane or spandex.

Padding material also varies from bra to bra. You may want padding that helps support your breasts, conceals your nipples and helps guard against leaks. You may find that padding feels too compressive. You may want padding you can take in and out depending on how you feel. Most of the testers preferred fixed padding, because it doesn’t shift and bunch when you unclip your bra to nurse or when you machine wash it.

Nursing Bra Design

The important elements of the bra design you want to take a closer look at are the band, the hook-and-eye closure, the straps, the nursing clips, the slings and the cups. After a few weeks or months, you may want to consider underwire.

As with any bra, the band should be doing the heavy lifting, not the straps. “Eighty-five percent of the support comes from the band,” says Polin. “The right band takes pressure off your shoulders.” So it’s most important to get the band size right. You want the band to fit snugly on the loosest hook and eye (to give you room to tighten it as it stretches out) and the center gore (a.k.a. the connecting piece between the cups), if there is one, to tack against your breastbone. You should just be able to stick your finger under the band. It shouldn’t dig into your back or slide up onto your breast tissue; it should stay flat on your rib cage. Many nursing bras have a wider band to help it stay in place. Ones that are ideal for sensitive breasts have more of a long-line look to avoid compressing the tissue; I personally liked the Tajinebanane x Cache Coeur I’m Enough Brassière as a high-quality and fun long-line option.

The Hook-And-Eye Closure

A nursing bra band’s closure should ideally have more hook-and-eye rows than your regular bra. That way, you can let it out when your breasts need more room. It will also let you tighten it more when it starts to stretch out. (You will be laundering this bra a lot, so it stretching out is pretty unavoidable.) The more rows, the more flexible the fit. I also tried pull-on styles, including a pull-on style with a hook-and-eye closure. They can be comfortable, but they’re not as adjustable.

The best nursing bras have adjuster sliders on the front, where you can reach them easily, instead of on the back, the way a regular bra does. That way, you can lengthen and shorten the straps to give your breasts more space or to better support a pump flange when you need to without having to get undressed. Ideally, the strap material is a bit grippy or textured to hold the adjuster sliders securely in place.

If you need more support, you may want thicker straps or a racerback and cross-back style. Some standard bras have straps that can crisscross or hook together at the back so you can wear it as a cross-back as well.

The Nursing Clips

On the front where the straps connect to the cup, many nursing bras have a clip on each side. They allow you to fold down the fabric of the cup and let your boob out to feed your baby. (The other option is a pull-down style, but I didn’t include any of those bras in this testing.) The clip should feel sturdy and easy to undo with one hand. It’s ideal if it’s made of a more durable material and not flimsy plastic; if it breaks, your nursing bra will be toast. Some nursing bras have a gold or metallic clip for a pretty and subtly luxurious touch.

When the cup is unclipped, your bra will stay on thanks to a sling that cups your breast and attaches the strap to the band. There are several different sling styles: “None, string, soft side or full,” says Caldwell. “This really comes down to coverage choice, and some parents like more skin-to-skin contact, while others like the sling to protect their skin and point the bust forward for baby.” If you have a larger bust, you may want a bra with a more supportive sling built in.

Well-designed, supportive cups help you avoid that uniboob look. Look for a “good design that allows for lift and separation of the breasts,” says Cake Maternity’s Tracey Montford. As with regular bras, nursing bras can achieve this with full coverage or demi- or triangle-style coverage. If you have a smaller bust, you may like the look of a demi bra. For those who have a larger bust, a demi-style bra may not provide enough support.

If you typically wear an underwire bra, you may be anxious to get back into one. Underwire nursing bras do exist; I do like the ThirdLove 24/7 Classic Nursing Bra . However, know that experts advise waiting at least until your postpartum checkup to do so. “Wearing any bra that is too tight or pressing too hard into the breast tissue can lead to mastitis or clogged ducts,” says Shapiro. “It is usually best to wait out the first six-week breast size fluctuation period before moving into an underwire bra.” Then, be sure the underwire presses only onto your rib cage and not onto your breast tissue.

Nursing Bra Care

Like any lingerie, nursing bras range from machine-wash and dry to hand-wash and line dry. If you’re only buying a few bras, you may not want to have to wait for them to line dry to be ready to wear again. Take a close look at the label or care instructions online.

My Expertise

I’ve worked as a writer and editor for my entire decade-plus career, and women’s health is one of my primary areas of interest. I worked as the health and wellness editor at O, The Oprah Magazine and Martha Stewart Living , where I reported on topics ranging from heart disease and meditation to the keto diet and, yes, maternal health. I’ve covered the same topics as a reporter for those and many more publications, including Elle , Allure , JustBobbi and The Strategist.

I became a mom myself in May 2022. My daughter and I got off to a bumpy start feeding-wise, thanks to her tongue-tie and my inexperience, and I focused my research-inclined brain on improving our technique. We made friends with our lactation consultant, the wonderful Signorelli, who joined the panel of moms who helped test nursing bras for this story. In spite of all our hard work, I ended up exclusively pumping, and like many moms I’ve talked to, I have mixed feelings about it. At times, it felt like if I could just find the right bra or the right nursing top, everything would fall into place. Pumping would be less heinous. My boobs and hands wouldn’t hurt so much. I’d feel more like a human woman and less like a robot cow, and therefore be more pleasant to hang out with. I know breastfeeding is easier for some moms, but it’s not easy for anybody. That’s why I became so passionate about the topic.

To research this story, I spoke with maternal health expert and lactation counselor Shapiro, founder of Boober, an online platform where parents can find lactation consultants and doulas; Amanda Glenn , certified lactation consultant and founder of Exclusive Pumping (an excellent resource for my fellow EPs); and Bolman, a postpartum nurse and international board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) who worked in the postpartum and lactation departments at Cleveland Clinic’s Hillcrest Hospital for 26 years and is now at Breastfeeding Medicine of Northeast Ohio. Bolman’s Therapeutic Breast Massage in Lactation (TBML) technique is what eventually saved me from my chronic clogged ducts. (If searching for help with clogged ducts brought you here, please watch Bolman’s videos .) I also reached out to expert bra fitters: Kristyn Polin, customer service supervisor at Bare Necessities; Kimmay Caldwell, an undergarment educator and bra coach at Hurray Kimmay; and Cake Maternity founder Tracey Montford, who started her Australian company after she couldn’t find a nursing bra that worked for her.

Your Questions, Answered

Parents / Alli Waataja

Welcome to the busy, rewarding, and tiring world of breastfeeding your baby ! While doing this very important job, many lactating parents like to wear a nursing bra to provide easy access to their breasts, accommodate fluctuating breast sizes, and provide support to heavy breasts that may be full of milk.

There is a wide range of nursing and pumping bras on the market, with options for lounging, sleeping, exercising, and yes, even looking sexy. When shopping for bras, one category is most important. " Comfort is a big factor to take into consideration since the lactating person may experience breast soreness and engorgement," lactation consultant Rebecca Agi, MS, IBCLC, tells Parents. Nursing bras should not be constricting, and they should provide some support.

To select the best nursing bras, we asked a group of moms to test 21 nursing bras while they were breastfeeding their kids, pumping, and going about their everyday lives. In addition to overall comfort, our testers looked at the fit, support, breastfeeding access , material, and style of these bras. After months of testing, we narrowed down our list to these best nursing bras.

Best Overall

Hatch everyday nursing bra, why we like it.

This nursing bra ranked best overall after impressing our testers with its comfort and ease of use. "This is my go-to nursing bra," our tester shared. "It's one of the most comfortable I've tried [and] fits like a glove, plus the micro scalloping detail is pretty."

Along with major comfort , the bra stands out for the many adjustable features. The front strap adjusters are easy to reach. The hook-and-eye clasps in the back have four settings, and there's even a J-hook to configure the straps into a racerback style. We like that the adjustability allows you to wear this bra from pregnancy through postpartum . "I used the hook-and-eye closures to adjust the band as my body made its way back to a normal shape postpartum," our tester said.

Easy access is another feature we love about this bra, especially since that's the whole goal of nursing bras. Hatch has created clips that work one-handed, and our testers can vouch that they do work and did not experience any fumbling or wardrobe malfunctions with this top pick.

The bra comes in sizes from Small through Extra Large, and the size chart on the website will help you choose the appropriate fit. For a super soft bra, this pick is also surprisingly supportive, our tester said. Finally, we like that the bra is available in eight color options since it can be hard to find an attractive bra with color options beyond beige, white, pink, or black.

But Take Note

While this bra is more expensive than others on the list, our tester shared, "Given that it's my first choice when I open my bra drawer, I'd say it's well worth the investment." Also, the brand offers discounts for buying multiples, which is a great incentive to stock up.

The Details

  • Type of access: One-handed clasp
  • Size range: Small–Extra Large

Best for Feeding Newborns

Bodily the everything bra.

The Bodily Everything Bra impressed our tester with its comfort, especially as a sleep and lounging bra. Ideal for the newborn phase that will keep you busy breastfeeding day and night , this bra stands out as a sleep bra because it's the rare hybrid bralette with a hook and eye clasp instead of an overhead pull-down style. And, access is made easy with nursing clips on both sides, so you won't be fumbling with the bra in the day or night.

Mom of two Samantha Hutten (not one of our testers) likes a back clasp feature , too. "I prefer the ones that unclasp at the back rather than the sports bra kind because it's easier to get on and off and feels more like a 'regular' bra," she tells Parents. The clasp made it stand out in our tester's experience, too. "While this is a minor detail, it made me reach for this bra more often than other sleep bras," the tester said.

The fabric is great for those looking for a soft, flexible bra . It doesn't provide a ton of support, and the bralette style can result in a uni-boob look, especially if your breasts are larger. On the plus side, since there's no decoration and the material is so soft, it does lay flat and smooth under clothing. Plus, in testing, this bra held up well to multiple machine washes, which is key since you'll be wearing it on repeat.

The Details:

  • Type of access: Nursing clips in the front
  • Material: Micromodal and elastane blend
  • Adjustments: Front slider straps and back hook-and-eye clasp

Best Nursing and Pumping Bra

Bodily the do anything bra.

In the constant superhero work of feeding a baby, you may want or need to move between nursing and pumping . If you plan to alternate between the two, you'll want to add this bra to your arsenal. Our tester really liked how the straps can be adjusted from the front, enabling her to "adjust them throughout the day as your breasts change shape and fill up before a feed or pump and deflate after."

While using this for pumping could take a little trial and error, the Bodily site shares instructions for two options on how to fit pump flanges into the bra and has a helpful video showcasing how to set yourself up for successful pumping.

We love the silky, smooth fabric that looks and feels a little more luxurious than other nursing bras and comes in three colors. Our tester found it "incredibly comfortable." The only drawback is for those who face excessive leaking because the fabric isn't super absorbent. Our tester noted it is "incredibly quick drying" if you just have a drop or two of milk on your nipple or breast, but for major leaks, you may have to wear this bra with nursing pads.

  • Type of access: Clip-down access for nursing, two stretchy slits in the cups for hands-free pumping
  • Size range: S–3X
  • Material: Polyamide-elastane blend
  • Adjustments: Adjustable slider straps and hook-and-eye back closure; straps convert to racerback for additional support
  • Care instructions: Machine wash cold on delicate cycle, line dry

Best Nursing and Pumping Runner-Up

Kindred bravely nursing bra.

In our test, the Kindred Bravely was a successful runner-up as best nursing and pumping bra. It has a lot of great features, including fitting very true to size, providing amazing support, and being incredibly comfortable.

Our tester liked the "thick and sturdy" material of the bra, which has a sports bra-like design. They also had to "pull both layers down toward my navel in order for my son to have access for breastfeeding." On the flip side, because it's so sturdy, it provides unparalleled support , and there's zero back or shoulder strain, which is a major benefit.

To use this bra, there's a double clip access, which our tester found to be a bit clumsy, especially for the nursing access. For pumping, you undo the top clasp, pump, and make sure you put the clasp back in the right spot. For nursing, you have to undo both clasps, feed them, and then get them both hooked correctly. Tired moms do enough, so the challenge of a double clasp, especially one-handed, may make some think twice about this choice.

  • Type of access: Double clip access—one for nursing, one for pumping
  • Size range: Small–XXXL Busty
  • Material: Nylon-spandex blend
  • Adjustments: Adjustable straps, hook-and-eye back closure, plus additional bra extender included
  • Care instructions: Hand wash, line dry

Best Bra for Large Breasts

Kindred bravely sublime nursing sports bra.

The pullover racerback bra looks sporty and comes in a wide range of sleek colors, including some on-trend ombre picks. While this pick is considered a sports bra and will work for larger breast sizes, it's best to use only for low-impact exercises. If you're planning on running or doing other high-impact exercises, this bra won't provide enough support for larger breasts. Our tester agreed and also felt that the bra stretched out a bit after a couple of wears.

For nursing access, there are clips on either side that make it easy to get your breasts out. Moisture-wicking fabric is helpful for leaks, sweat, or any combo of the two! This pick is recommended for extra support around the house or any low-impact exercises , which can be a beneficial way to get your postpartum body moving again.

If you like a pullover racerback bra, you'll have no issues with its shape, but if you are used to a back clasp, you may miss that adjustable feature. You can adjust the fit on the shoulder straps in the front, however.

  • Type of access: Nursing clips for easy access
  • Size range: Small–XXL Busty
  • Adjustments: Adjustable sliders in the front straps

Best Pull-Down Style

Bodily so easy bra.

Our testers praised pull-down styles as having the easiest access, and this bra provides easy access with a comfortable fit. Our tester shared that she felt the lightweight "material is stretchy, comfortable, and forgiving."

The fabric is made with aloe vera-infused nylon. While this makes for a lightweight material , our tester didn't mention any benefit from the infusion, so it's hard to say if it is a worthwhile addition. Available in three sizes and three colors, the almond/black color combo is the chicest and will look at home in any lingerie drawer after your baby has weaned.

While this bra may work for those with smaller breasts, more well-endowed people may not feel supported enough by this choice. Additionally, the pull-down aspect makes it so your entire breast is exposed, which may make more modest folks uncomfortable.

  • Type of access: Pull down
  • Size range: Small, Medium, Large
  • Material: Aloe vera-infused nylon and elastane blend
  • Adjustments: None
  • Care instructions: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low delicate

Best Sports Bra

Ingrid + isabel seamless nursing sports bra.

Our tester raved that this was the most comfortable bra out of all the nursing bras she tested. Spoken like a true tired mom, she "wore it through multiple physical activities, going out for the day, and it was so comfortable, I forgot I was wearing it to bed multiple nights."

The full-coverage bra has front hook access for breastfeeding. Our tester noted that when you pull down the flap, "it exposes most of your breast." Folks who are more modest or will be breastfeeding in public may want to keep that in mind.

Crafted like a racerback sports bra, this pick is appropriate for medium-impact activities but might not cut it if you want to run or do other high-impact exercises. The bra pulls on overhead, so there are no back clasps for adjustment. The shoulder straps are adjustable and can be tightened for additional support.

  • Type of access: Front hook access
  • Size range: XS–XL
  • Material: Polyamide, polyester, and elastane blend
  • Adjustments: Shoulder straps are adjustable
  • Care instructions: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low

Best Seamless

Kindred bravely ultra comfort smooth classic nursing bra.

Our testers praised this bra as a "no-fuss, quality nursing bra." While not super exciting, it fits well, supports your breasts, and does provide a smooth fit with a seamless look, so it's an excellent option for tighter tops. Available in two colors, this bra may not be a thrilling option, but is a handy workhorse that's comfortable and easy to wear.

The smooth fabric feels good on your skin, and front nursing clips make boob access a cinch. We like that there are lots of adjustable features on this one; both the back hook-and-eye and the sliders on the strap help you get a perfect fit. If you're wearing a nursing tank top , this bra helpfully converts into a racerback style.

Our tester did find that the light padding is not secured into the bra, so it moved and bunched a bit when the cups were down for feeding. Also, she found the band rides up a bit under the cups.

  • Type of access: Front nursing clips
  • Material: Polyamide-spandex blend
  • Adjustments: Adjustable strap sliders, hook-and-eye back closure, converts to racerback style

Best Underwire

On gossamer mesh convertible nursing bra.

Fans of underwire bras will appreciate this chic and simple bra that is comfortable, relatively affordable, and looks stylish. Underwire bras offer a lot of support and can help create a flattering shape by lifting and separating the breasts. Some women prefer them, while others are happy to banish them outright. It's all a personal preference, but if you want to try an underwire nursing bra, this is a great starting point.

Our tester is "a huge fan of underwire bras" and found "this was far superior" to others. "The main reason is the fit." This bra fits well with no gaps and no spillover , and the breathable mesh fabric is comfortable and soft.

For breastfeeding access, the one-handed clasps are easy to use. Since it's mesh fabric, there's no bulk when you open up the bra to feed your little one. The only drawbacks our tester found were that the fabric in the back was a little itchy, and the bra needs to be hand washed, so it's not as easy to clean as others that can be tossed in the laundry pile.

  • Type of access: One-handed clasps on straps
  • Size range: 32B–38F
  • Material: 100% nylon
  • Adjustable: Adjustable shoulder straps, hook-and-eye back closure
  • Care instructions: Hand wash

Cosabella Never Say Never Maternity Mommie Nursing Bralette

If you're a fan of Cosabella's popular lace bralette, you'll likely enjoy adding this pick to your lingerie collection. For others, it may be a bit of a challenging splurge. Our tester found the bralette style comfortable , and it does provide some support. "If you have to flash a bit of bra in public to breastfeed, it's absolutely beautiful," she said.

The lovely lace is available in four sizes and 11 showstopping colors. If you're between sizes, our tester recommends sizing up. She also shared that to get more support, she often "pulled the straps on the tightest setting," but by midday, they would need adjusting.

Tired new moms may not appreciate that this lace bra needs to be hand-washed, which also becomes an investment in time and money.

  • Size range: S–XL
  • Material: Polyamide-elastane blend lace; cotton-elastane blend lining; cotton, polyester, and elastane cup
  • Adjustments: Adjustable straps

Our team of three testers wore a variety of nursing bras for a brief time (three hours), an extended time (eight hours), during at least three different feedings, and through half an hour of physical activity. While wearing the bras, they took notes in a variety of categories including comfort, fit, access, and support. Finally, they all answered the same questions for each bra tested, so that every bra was judged on the same criteria.

Factors to Consider When Buying a Nursing Bra

Fit & size.

Finding the right fit may take a bit of trial and error. "Rib band size and bust measurement should be taken into consideration when purchasing a pumping and/or nursing bra," lactation consultant Agi says. "Tight-fitting bras and bras with underwire should be avoided as they can contribute to plugged ducts , especially during the postpartum period as milk supply is regulating and breast size is fluctuating."

Look for bras that are comfortable and stretchy to accommodate varying breast size. Just like your baby will grow and change, so will your bra needs. It's better not to purchase a lot of one type as you may find your needs change. "I usually measure according to the manufacturer's instructions, but still end up either ordering multiple sizes from the get-go to compare or exchanging for a different size," mom Samantha Hutten tells us. "I still haven't mastered the art of figuring out my bra size."

The goal of nursing bras is easy access to the breast. There are a few different styles of bras to consider:

  • Clasp down: These bras have small clasps on the shoulder straps that open flaps to expose the breast and nipple. Most can be opened one-handed, and the level of modesty depends on the bra. This type usually provides more support to the breast, especially when the clasps are closed.
  • Pull down: This style is clasp free, so you just pull part of the bra down to expose the breast and nipple. While this style may be easier, it also can expose more of the breast and may provide less support for bigger breasts.
  • Pumping bra: Bras made exclusively for pumping have cut-out areas that allow you to insert the pump shields and support them hands-free. Each style is a bit different, but most retailers have photos or even videos demonstrating how the bra and pump work together.
  • Combination: Some bras are made to alternate between pumping and nursing. While this can be a benefit to some parents, it can also mean the bra is made with extra layers of fabric, which could be a drawback.

Many lactation specialists and professionals recommend nursing parents avoid underwire brasduring the initial postpartum period. Wire-free bras are often softer and more comfortable, which is great when you may be awake and asleep at all hours of the day and night. If you feel more comfortable in an underwire bra, make the transition slowly by wearing it for a few hours a day until you can build up to longer stretches. The goal is to avoid a tight bra or have the underwire push against a duct, leading to a clog or infection. Mastitis is most common in the first six months of breastfeeding, so if you're past that milestone, an underwire bra may be fine.

A bra is so close to your skin that it should be breathable and comfortable. "Any bra that is going to be worn during the postpartum period should be made of material that washes well, like cotton or nylon," Agi says. "Between leaky breasts, increased sweat from hormonal imbalances, and baby spit up, these bras are going to be washed a lot."

You may also want a bra made of durable material that you can throw into the washing machine (and even the dryer!). Check the care instructions before buying if this is important to you. Always wash a new bra prior to wearing it.

Find a style that is comfortable and fits your life. While it may be sad to give up lacy and beautiful lingerie, know that this phase is temporary. As your body regulates and your breast size and supply even out, you may be able to find a bra that fits both your preferred style and new way of life.

"When my sons were newborn, the really soft ones were my favorite [because of] sore, cracked nipples, [and] engorgement," Hutton says. "When I went back to work, I tried to get some nicer ones that provided a little more shape instead of a uniboob."

Be sure to wear the right bra for your activity. If you're exercising, wear a sports bra. If you're sleeping, wear a sleep bra. Your future breasts will thank you.

When is the best time to buy nursing bras?

It's fine to buy a nursing bra before you deliver, but if possible, wait until near the end of your pregnancy. At that point, your body will have grown, but be prepared for your breasts to get bigger once your milk comes in. If you want to plan ahead, purchase sleep bras or other types that are soft, stretchy, and have room to expand into. Once the baby arrives and your breast size regulates, you'll know if you want a sleep bra, sports bra, or everyday bra that can accommodate your new nursing or pumping lifestyle.

Should you go up a cup size in a nursing bra?

This depends on the style and fit of the bra, so read user reviews and check the brand's size guide. During breastfeeding or pumping, breast size can fluctuate from early morning before feeds to the afternoon when you've been nursing all day. "A bra that molds to the changing shape of the breasts is ideal," Agi says.

She breastfed all three of her kids and wore a wide range of nursing bras through that experience. After the initial newborn phase, Maya did prefer underwire bras for the support they provided. She probably still has a comfy sleep bra lingering in her pajama drawer.

We tested these nursing bras with real moms, pre and postpartum, to assess comfort, functionality, and support in side-by-side comparisons. We aim to help you find the right bra for your needs and lifestyle because the right fit can make all the difference.

Nursing and feeding your baby can be a wild but rewarding ride. You might need other supplies, like our favorite nursing pads for leaks, a top-ranked nipple cream to soothe nipples, or a breast pump for milk expression. Don't forget, a favorite pregnancy pillow can be useful for in-bed nursing!

Top 8 Nursing Bras - Test Results

Best overall nursing bra, bravado body silk seamless nursing bra.

Editors' Choice Award

  • Fit/Comfort 8.0
  • Support 8.0
  • Ease of Use 7.0

We like that the cup liners are removable, but we had problems with them shifting around. We opted to go without rather than adjusting and readjusting them. However, if you have a heavy milk supply, you may want to use them as an extra layer of absorbency. While this bra is so comfortable you might forget you're wearing it, the cut and shape are reminiscent of a grandma's bra. But hey, Grandma probably knows a thing or two about brassieres. If you need a racerback or more lounge-style bra, the Ingrid and Isabel Seamless is another one to consider with similar comfort and support. Overall, when you are nursing your baby, style is likely one of the last things on your mind, and the Bravado Body Silk Seamless Bra more than makes up for it in comfort. We love this bra and think that it is one you will reach for again and again during your nursing years.

Most Stylish Nursing Bra

Ingrid and isabel seamless.

Best Value Award

  • Fit/Comfort 7.0

The racerback style features drop-cup nursing access, but because the front is constructed from one large fabric panel, it may take some maneuvering to find a comfortable position for nursing. You will likely appreciate two individual pads sewn into the bra for extra coverage and absorbency. However, we don't like that there is no option to remove them, especially as they are so thick. The material has a very thick-ribbed texture that may be less comfortable for some users over long periods. The Bravado Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra has a smoother fabric and is not ribbed, making it a more traditional option than this racerback style. This bra runs a bit small, so you may want to size up. Ultimately, we feel these are minor flaws in an overall fantastic bra and would not hesitate to recommend it to a friend.

Best for Sleeping Comfortably

Kindred bravely french terry racerback.

Top Pick Award

  • Fit/Comfort 9.0
  • Support 4.0
  • Ease of Use 9.0

Because it is a sleeping bra, the French Terry Racerback offers less support than daytime bras. It doesn't come with any padding, so you'll need to purchase nursing pads separately if you need them. There is no dedicated space to insert the pads, so they may travel through the night and end up in the wrong spot. If you like a racerback but want one with more support than a sleep bra, the Ingrid and Isabel Seamless is a good choice our testers thought was comfortable and supportive. The Kindred Bravely runs very small, so it may take a few tries to find your perfect fit. We recommend ordering multiples to try on at home rather than guessing. We think these are minimal drawbacks, and we love the overall functionality of the Kindred Bravely. It is our number one recommendation for a sleep bra for nursing.

How We Test Nursing Bras

We started our nursing bra selection and testing process by researching popular and well-known products on the market. We narrowed our selection to capture the best of the lot and include various styles. We purchased each bar and assessed them side-by-side with the help of nursing moms to determine which are the best. We considered comfort, ease of use, quality, and the ability of the bra to help aid in nursing privacy. We took our test results and feedback from moms to determine rank and award winners.

Analysis and Test Results

After hours of research, we selected the best nursing bras available. We then dove further in with hands-on testing to find the best of the best, examining aspects such as fit, style, and comfort. In our tests, we considered Fit/Comfort, Support, Ease of Use, and Style for each bra.

What's the Best Value?

Finding an excellent nursing bra isn't as easy as picking something up and heading home. Choosing the most inexpensive option you can find is also not the best strategy, as it could be too uncomfortable for long-term or everyday wear. Because you could be wearing your nursing bra for more than a year, we think it is best to buy a few comfortable and easy-to-use options that perhaps cost a little more than looking for the least expensive option you may hate wearing. There is value in selecting a product you will enjoy wearing. The Ingrid and Isabel Seamless performed better than average in all our tests and had a reasonable price compared to the competition. Our tester enjoyed this bra so much that she bought several for herself when testing was over. While not the cheapest in the review, it is a high-scoring option with a lower price than some competitors.

Fit/Comfort

When you are pregnant or nursing, you want to be comfortable . There are so many other things happening with your body that an ill-fitting piece of clothing can be the straw that breaks the camel's back. If a bra doesn't feel good when you're wearing it, it's the wrong bra.

The lower band should be snug but broad enough not to dig into your rib cage. We also prefer straps that are slightly wider than average, like the Bravado Body Silk Seamless Bra , because they will help distribute the load better. The softness and stretchiness of the fabric are important when considering the possibility of irritation and chafing. We love the On Gossamer Next To Nothing material because it feels silky and soft in sensitive areas. The best bras will move with you and not feel restricted. The Ingrid and Isabel Seamless is a perfect example of a bra that flexes to fit the shape of your body.

The fit of a bra can vary widely depending on body shape and personal preference. The use of good design and extra stretchy fabrics can make some bras more universally comfortable and flattering. When choosing a bra, ensure there are no hot spots where the material rubs or is too tight. It is equally essential to avoid bras that gap in the wrong places; extra loose fabric can cause just as much irritation as extra tight. In our tests, the top-scoring bras for fit and comfort were the Kindred Bravely French Terry Racerback and Bravado Body Silk Seamless Bra. The Bravado has a wide range of adjustments for a customized fit that helps mothers of all sizes find a good fit. The Kindred is the softest option in the group, perfect for those who value fabric feel. The lowest-scoring bra for fit and comfort is the La Leche League with itchy, thin materials that stretch too much too quickly.

Different mamas will appreciate different levels of support from their nursing bras. However, as your breasts grow, you will likely need a bit more than your pre-pregnancy bras provide.

The On Gossamer is the closest thing we can find to a standard bra, but that still offers some much-appreciated additional support. We also like the Bravado Body Silk Seamless Bra for its full-coverage design that is snug but not suffocating. It provides adequate support without mushing your chest into the dreaded uni-boob or shapeless lump.

nursing bra - the thick straps of the brooks fiona sport bra feel sturdy enough to...

For working out, you will appreciate a bra with maximum support. Unfortunately, this can mean sacrificing shaping ability. If you want gentle support for low-impact activities, the Ingrid and Isabel Seamless bra is a sporty, full-coverage, still cute option. Some of the least supportive bras on our list are those for sleep; products like the Kindred Bravely French Terry Racerback and La Leche League are looser fitting and more comfortable through the night. But if you wear it while sleeping, perhaps support is less of a concern. The most supportive option in this review is the Cake Maternity Croissant , thanks to the underwire that provides more support but could be less comfortable.

Ease of Use

How easy a nursing bra is to use will significantly influence how often it gets worn. Nursing bras have two access types: some have a side pull style that utilizes extra stretchy fabric sewn into a wrap style.

Others have a clip where the cup and strap meet, allowing you to drop the cup down for easy feeding. All the bras we tested have a way to keep the strap from slipping to the back, making it easy to adjust the bra back into its regular position.

Although it is easy to remove and adjust, we don't like that there...

The Kindred Bravely French Terry Racerback is a foolproof sleep bra for ease of use. It is one of the easiest to take on and off, has no extra adjustments to fumble with, and does not require you to use a clip, making it perfect for groggy midnight feedings. The On Gossamer is the ideal daytime bra. The straps are easy to adjust, and the cup's clip is easy to undo with one hand. We also appreciate that the cups are two separate pieces with a space in the middle, making it much easier to drop one cup at a time and get it entirely out of the baby's way without exposing your goods to the world. The hardest-to-use bra is the Cake Maternity Croissant , thanks to extremely difficult-to-adjust straps.

nursing bra - the cake maternity croissant offered the best shaping and support...

The cherry on top of all this is style. How does the bra look ? For this metric, we prefer bras with some system to prevent uni-boob, whether that means separate cups, extra elastic, or, in some cases, underwire support.

Also, consider how well a bra will match your maternity wardrobe. Do you tend to wear more racerbacks? Or do you usually go with the standard straight straps? Whatever your preference, you want a bra to match.

nursing bra - the longline silhouette of the ingrid and isabel offers a more sleek...

We love the Ingrid and Isabel Seamless racerback bra for more of a sporty athleisure look. It is one of this review's most discreet nursing bras and can easily be worn under a loose, flowy tank for extra coverage and support. The most supportive shaping bra is the Cake Maternity Croissant , the only underwire option we tested. If you want a smooth nursing bra with a little perk, it is perfect for wearing more form-fitting shirts or dresses. The On Gossamer Next To Nothing earned a high score for style thanks to a design that doesn't look like a granny bra and natural boob separation, which is harder to find in nursing bras than you'd think.
