9 facts we learned a&e biography: the macho man.
10 Wrestling Finishers Fans Love (That Wouldn't Hurt In Real Life)
10 best bodyguards in pro wrestling history, ranked, 10 defunct wrestling promotions: what did their world championship look like.
Seldom few wrestlers ignite the joy in fans the way The Macho Man did and still does. What young fan hasn’t climbed all the way to the top of their couch and gazed out into their living rooms, pretending to peer out into throngs of fans before making the leap? Leaping onto a sibling, a friend, a wrestling buddy with The Big Elbow. Who among us hasn’t belted out an “Ooohhh, Yeah, Dig It!” or “Snap Into A Slim Jim”?

As part of the partnership between A&E and WWE, recently, the network’s Biography special featured one of the greatest legends of all time, "Macho Man" Randy Savage. Here are some tidbits from the show that you might have missed...and no, not one mention of any Stephanie McMahon rumor, but there are others.
9 Early Days
As Randy’s father, Angelo Poffo toured the world, his two children were actually born in different countries. Randy was born in Columbus, Ohio. Leaping Lanny Poffo, The Genius, was actually born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The boy’s mother must have been where Randy got his tough exterior . Judy Poffo was a German Jew who survived the coming of Hitler. According to his mother, he couldn’t sit still at all and Lanny thought of him as another father figure.
8 Minor League Baseball Success
The Macho Man was a pretty decent success in the minor leagues of baseball. He played for developmental versions of the White Sox, the Cardinals, and the Cincinnati Reds. While that aspect of his career has been well documented, Lanny laid down this amazing nugget - after suffering an accident that separated his right shoulder, the future Macho Man learned how to throw left-handed!

He became a first basemen and became a switch hitter and switch thrower. Once he was cut from the White Sox, he decided that if the team was finished with him, he was finished with them. He never spoke about baseball again and instead spoke to his father about how to get into the business.
7 The Poffos Ran A Rogue Promotion
In the late 70s, there were “fiefdoms,” as Bruce Prichard described. Unique territories all over the country. Despite Jerry Lawler running the Memphis territory, The Poffos came into the same region with their own company, ICW. Despite their not having anything to do with one another, Savage kept issuing a challenge to Jerry Lawler. But The King and his promotion refused to acknowledge or do business with ICW. Once they were out of business, the feud between Savage and Lawler drew big money.
6 The Promo Style
Randy’s younger brother, Lanny Poffo, explained that Randy had never come to him for advice before and it was Savage that always doled out the advice. However, once he started calling himself Randy Savage, he came to Leaping Lanny for help with the promo style.

It was The Genius to suggest copying from the most savage wrestler they ever saw - Pampero Firpo, the Wild Bull Of The Pampas. From Firpo came the voice and the iconic “Ooh Yeah.” Lanny said Savage never used his natural voice again.
5 Introducing Miss Elizabeth
Married for just six months before he made his WWE debut, Miss Elizabeth was introduced as his manager, and The Beauty And The Beast dichotomy was born. Randy has always looked out for his family and had made sure Lanny would be brought to WWE as well as his new bride.
Elizabeth was a commentator in Memphis and Randy hoped that’s how she’d be used in WWE. But Vince McMahon took one look at her and realized that her commentating would be a waste and she became his manager - wrestling’s great love story had just begun.
4 Unfortunately, The Stories Are True
Generally, where there’s smoke, there’s fire. But with both The Macho Man and Miss Elizabeth no longer able to speak for themselves, it’s very voyeuristic to hear those that knew them to discuss just how protective and borderline domineering Savage was of his wife. The wrestlers generally like to embellish on all kinds of stories, but when even his brother comments about the situation and the marriage, tragically the stories (such as locking her in his dressing room) are true. Randy Poffo completely became The Macho Man and it did help to cement the amount of heel heat Savage would garner.
3 Dressed Like A Pimp
Hogan suggested to The Macho Man that he needed to look like a star and suggested he call Michael Braun. The Tampa area costumer told Savage that he "needs from the floor to past his head.”
Braun designed several outfits for Savage . Braun explained that during the 80s, several Tampa area pimps would give Braun the seal of approval. Braun used some of the inspiration from the seedier parts of Tampa society to design some of the iconic outfits of The Macho Man. Braun made a fortune off of Savage’s outfits, despite Randy saving his pennies in every other facet of his career.
2 Hogan’s A Fool...Again
Hulk and Andre at WrestleMania III may just be WWE's first iconic moment. But as fans all know, it was The Macho Man and Ricky Steamboat that would steal the show.

During the Biography special, Hogan was confident in saying that neither Ricky nor Randy set out to steal the show from Hulk and Andre. Meanwhile, both before and after this snippet of Hogan’s interview, The Dragon assured viewers (and hopefully Hogan was watching too), that stealing the show is exactly what they intended to do, using the match they both plotted out on legal pads.
1 Randy’s Slim Jim Deal
For all of the talk about Easy E and ATM Eric and a huge amount of guys jumping ship for more money, Randy Savage didn’t leave WWE for any of that. He just wanted to wrestle instead of commentating. When he left WWE, he took his famous Slim Jim sponsorship to WCW with him. The company actually paid his WCW salary and Eric Bischoff didn’t have to spend a dime on The Macho Man.
